I have a parrot finch that has very scraggly tail feathers. I am not sure if it is a molt or something else. It's mate is fine. What could it be other than a molt? What are common causes feather deterioration?
Thanks!

Re: Thinning tail feathers
this is entirely normal, especially during teh breeding season for hens particularly. When I firs got into RFPF I was shocked at birds turning up looking like they had their tails pulled out. Also happens during the moult.
