Doesn't sound normal to me Chrissy.
I would start off by giving them a heat lamp and some electrolytes to try and get their energy up. Do you have any idea if they may have been in contact with something like perfumes or sprays?

NO that is NOT normal.
Finches don't like my hand in their cage, and being fluffed up is a sign they are not well.
Put a heat lamp (plain incandescent lamp) on their cage 24x7 (don't turn off the lamp at night). Heat for some reason helps them fight off what might be affecting them.

All of them are puffed up? It's also not really normal for them to be allowing your hand very close but birds will do that when they are ill.
Have they been displaying any symptoms of illness previously?
Is there anything in their environment (food/water or airborne) that is different than usual or new? There are many things that can make a bird sick such as scented candles, teflon pans, other various chemicals that may be released in the air.

What food are you feeding them?
If any wet veggies or fruit (lettuce, orange, etc), cut them out.
Are they going by the lamp?
The lamp should be right up against the cage, so they can get the heat from the lamp. If it is too warm for them, they can move away from the lamp. I've had ill birds go right up to the lamp to get all the heat they can get.
If you don't have an electrolyte solution, you can make your own.

If you have central air/heat, vapors from other parts of the house can move via the central air/heat system into the bird room.
How about anything w a scent; potpouri (sp?), perfume, cleaners?
What kind of lamp do you have on the cage? Smell the lamp. I had a CFL lamp go bad on me, and it STUNK, and I think the vapor killed some of my birds.

All good points heat will be needed. The heat allows the birds body to keep warm without the bird using its own energy to warm itself so.all that energy is now used to fight the problem. Place heat lamp directly outside the wire part of the cage, don't place lamp inside or your birds can burn themselves. I would at this point only feed seed and give boiled water if you haven't started with the electrolyte drink. When was the last time your birds were wormed.

I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you can figure out the cause and eliminate it.

Oh, how devastating! There's definitely got to be something more going on for them to all get sick at once and die all of a sudden.
I would not get new birds until you can figure out what the likely cause was. I would also thoroughly disinfect the cage, the food/water dishes, everything (or buy new).
So sorry to hear that... losing one is hard enough but all 3 at once...

I agree.
To loose all 3 at once makes me think environmental.
"Something" in the environment changed.
And as I mentioned, if your house has central air/heating what is in the air in one room will be pushed to all the other rooms in the house.
Think HARD.
Did you do ANYTHING different any place in the house in the last week or so? paint, glue, carpet, cooking w teflon pans, perfume, house scents, insect poison, etc.

Chrissy sorry to hear about your birds departing. As act12 said there seems do be an issue as all three sick at once and all departed at one time seems weird. You may have to have a think about what you have done over the last week to try and find the cause(s) of what may have contributed to this outcome. Its sad when losing one but all three is devastating.
