I suspect an impacted or infected preening gland. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. queenb

I'm not sure I am oriented correctly but is that on the bottom of the bird or on the topside?

The preening gland is typically found on the topside of the bird just above where the tail come out of the body.

If that is on the bottomside (underneath) the bird - I don't think it is the preening gland...

Liz is right, the preen gland is on the topside/rump of the bird...the yellow looks to be a possible fatty deposit.

I keep seeing the bird from underneath (due to how the legs are coming out). Can you get a pic from over top of the bird looking down on to it?

Here's a pic I took and posted here in April 2009 of my Star finch's preening gland. This is how a normal preening glad appears (looking down from above the bird) -

The picture looks like it is from the underside due to the way the legs look and the joints of the legs.

Good example of the gland, Liz!

Liz, Cindy, thanks so much...yes, I see what you are talking about. That was so nice of you to take the photos and take the time to post, really appreciate it.

A little later in the day, it was gone! She's pretty stressed, so I will wait until tomorrow to evaluate the area.

Thanks again~
