Hi Everyone
I was just asked if I am in need of another cage (used) and I am thinking it is always a good idea to have another cage....am I right...

How do I clean it? there wont be any finches going into it for a while so i can clean it and then let it sit outside in the - degree weather we are having in Ontario right now.... :)

anyways what does everyone do?

Good 'ol soap and water?? And maybe an S.O.S pad. Rub it down with a disinfectant and let is sit outside about a month or so. Might have some sorta cleaner at the pet store.

The last time I got a bunch of used cages I scrubbed the "organic matter" off then sprayed everything down heavily with a bleach-water solution. I let it sit for 10-20 minutes before hosing down completely and letting them dry.

So bleach and hot water to wash and then if needed an S.O.S pad to the areas that are needed ( If I remember right it was a clean cage). Wash clean really well and then place somewhere for a few weeks to make sure all stuff is dead.

Does this sound like a good plan? :)

Or is it better for piece of mind to buy new?

thanks

I've bought several second-hand but in excellent condition cages. Before using them I do the bleach and hot water cleaning using an old toothbrush to make sure I get right into those corners; then rinse really well. After it's dry, you're "off to the races".

Just make sure you check it over really good beforehand for any cracks.

thanks for the tips. I hope to be able to go and have a look at it in the next couple of days and if it is great condition then I will bring it home. If it isn't in great condition then I was say thanks but no thanks.
