I just read that Gouldians should get Scatt applied every 3 months as preventive maintenance. I have one BB male who is moulting but past his 3 month date.

Can I apply a drop of Scatt now even though he is moulting or do I have to wait until he is finished?

I dont see hwy ya couldnt do it now. I mean if the bird were carrying air sac mites and ailing we would do it and they can live through that, lol
Maybe Im wrong but I dont think it would hurt...Anyone else/??

I don't think it would hurt to apply the Scatt now. Molting takes a lot out of the birds, but air sac mites are worse.

Sally....are you saying that it is a good idea to apply Scatt even if the Gouldians have no symptoms?

I have never treated mine since I got them so maybe I should just as a precaution?

ya wanna scatt em every 3 months EVEN IF NO SYMPTOMS, once symptoms occur it could be to late, Its like wormin your dogs really, its preventative medicine.

I guess I always thought if they don't have it to start with they can't get it but I guess it ain't so!

As I have all my birds recorded on an Excel spreadsheet where I include their meds - I will schedule their Scatt doses every three months so I know ahead of time who is to get Scatt(ed) ahead of time.

I guess it's kind of like doing regular maintenance (oil changes) on my car - it's preventive maintenance for a long life!

yea like an oil change thats funny. Luckily all my birds get scatt same time as when i get ne wbirds I scat em, I dont trust folks who sale me birds saying yea I just done it, SURE YA DID< lol

I apply Scatt to every new bird the day it comes into my home too and then a second dose 3 weeks later.

It's the remembering every 3 months after that when it gets tricky.

its a good thing you keep detailed records like i do, lol

I actually keep an index card clipped to each cage for referral to important stuff without having to look it up.

Apparently, air sac mites can remain dormant in birds for ages, and then some bit of stress can activate them, that is why they get treated even without symptoms. Like wormers for horses, or heartworm medicine for our dogs.
