Hi I have a couple of finches that are approximately 9 -10years old. They are 2 males and they look elderly. One of them has this huge growth on his left side of his face just below his ear. recently it has gotten bigger and is beginning to impeade his vision. The other is missing alot of feathers around his face and his face is shrunken in but they are happy and still singing. They are very old and tend to sleep at the bottom of the cage but each morning they fly up to their to perch where they stay and sing most of the day. Can anyone tell me if this is worth a trip to the vet or if they know anything about this growth.
Thanks
Kathy

I'm sorry I don't know anything about geriatric care for older birds. Sounds like they are still happy if they are up and singing every day. Hopefully some experts with older finches will be able to post an answer for you.

I sadly have no advice for the elderly birds either, I would probably have the growth looked at if its effecting his vision,
Otherwise they sound happy enough in there home and possibly at age 10 being dragged to a vet could stress the poor ole guy so I dunno..

Sorry, I don't have any answers for you either. You could try to find an avian vet, call them, and find out if they have experience with finches and what their charges are. The only avian vet near me charges $45 just for an office call, and when I took a finch there one time, they stated that they normally only see the larger parrots, so didn't have a lot of experience with finches. They really weren't able to help me much, so a waste of money.
I was wondering what species, too. For some species, 9-10 years is ancient, while others will live longer than that.
