marks on beak

Hellooo! I know I've been absent for a long while. It's been a busy summer! The other day I noticed a red mark on my Mom Societies beak. I thought it was just a scratch from one of the others in her flight but when I saw it the next week I caught her up and took a close photo. I have to preface this with the information that my finches have never been outside nor have I added any finches to my flock. I've had my societies for over 2 years and have never seen this. I keep good records along with photographs and back in July her beak was smooth and clear. So I'm not sure if this is from an injury or something else. I'm hoping someone with expertise will be able to tell.

'Cracking' or marking on the beak is frequently a sign of respitory illness in finches. One of my current star finches,Fruit, and my previous Zebbie, Meep, both had this characteristic mark on their beaks (my Vet advised this!). Both have had repeated doses of antiobiotics/treatment for respitory illness.

How is it looking now Trish? I don't think it is what you originally thought it was..... Maybe it scratched it's beak somehow???

Sorry, been away for a while. I put diluted GSE on a Q-tip and carefully put it on her beak for a week. The red marks turned dark, and she's fine. She's never shown any signs of sickness. Just these marks. I still don't know what it was but it's healed up now.
Thanks for the advice and concern!

My #1 worry were those mites that burrow into the beak. Only I don't know how any could have gotten with my birds. I have to believe it was an injury even though there isn't anything in there to be injured on. I must say that if there is anything, eventually one of them will find it!
