HELP! Injured Green Singer!

I was lucky to have walked into my room at that time.. I heard shuffling on the bottom of the cage and saw that my female had been attacking my male... he was on the floor on his side, not moving. I picked him up right away and his face was covered in blood. She plucked all the feathers around his beak and forehead...

I cleaned the blood best I could with some water and I put him in a cage with his son for now (they get along just fine) since I have no other cages... He's moving around now, and just decided to perch at the top, but there's still some blood.
I don't want to risk any infections or anything and I wasn't sure what to do so I just cleaned with water...

Is there anything I should know, or something else I should be doing?

The help would be much appreciated.

If it were me, I would add a broad spectrum antibiotic such as ornacyn or ornacycline to the drinking water as well as some fast dissolving B12 for a few days. As I don't believe you can get that in Canada however, maybe a bit of neosporin or similar antiseptic ointment may be ok to apply. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Heat is always good, as is peace and quiet for a while. Good luck. Bob

Hi Nadia, sorry to hear of your bird's injuries!

If there is an actual, visible wound, a dot of neosporin should be all right. If you decide to give oral antibiotics, do one or the other, not both.

Like Bob suggested, heat is a good idea. Even a simple desk lamp is enough to provide extra warmth, just make sure the birds have space to get away from it if they need to. Egg food is also a good idea - protein to help replace the blood he lost. Keep a very close eye on his son - even though they have gotten along ok in the past, sometimes an injured, weak bird can cause another to try to drive him off.

Hey Nadia, I love green singers and I know how fiesty they can be too. I think what everbody else recommended was a good idea. you can pick up the onacycline(tetracycline for birds) at petsmart. I don't thi nk petco would see it. Glad you walked in when you did. hope he's doing well. -Tammy
