Air Sac Mite Symptoms?

Post by peeps3 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 9:22 am

Surely there are other posts with this question, but could anybody list air mite sac symptoms? I have been reading that Gouldians are prone to them.

So, anyone here who have used this SCATT or S76, and what are your experience from it?

I have lost a number of gouldians and it is probably from this. And now my "mother" female is looking bad. Would get nice to get rid of!

I have used S76 only as a prevenative. I have not had a bird with the mites, but alof of people prefer the SCATT. I like S76 because you can put it in the water and don't have to catch up the birds and apply it directly.

Here is a link that talks about both Scatt & S76...it might be helpful.

S76

Post by franceska » Thu Aug 07, 2008 2:03 pm

I tried the S76, since I have so many birds. All of the birds that looked bad certainly seemed to get better. The one that was "worst" still has some symptoms though. She might need some antibiotics as well. Although I cant stop her from continuing to lay eggs, which is probably taking its toll too! Took the nest away several months ago but then they just end up at the bottom of the cage.

It is good to give S76 or any ivermectin treatment for air sac mites on a regular basis as a preventative. If you have a bird that has not responded to the S76, I would treat it with SCATT. Many people do a preventative program of S76 or other ivermectin about every 3 months.

I haven't had this problem yet and hope not to, but have given my birds S76 and have but a dose in bath water for them to bathe in. Figure it couldnt hurt.

SCATT

Post by franceska » Sun Oct 05, 2008 10:15 am

Just want to post an update of my experience of SCATT and S76;

I had 2 gouldians and a canary that I suspected to be quite heavily infected with airsac mites. After treatment with S76 they seemed to get temporarily better, but the symptoms came back after 2-3 weeks.

I then tried SCATT, and after 2 months my gouldies look great! So I would warmly recommend SCATT to birds with actual symptoms, and S76 as a preventative.

The canary (which I suspect brought the mites in the first place) still seems to have some breathing problems, so I am not sure what to do with that one.

Personally, I hate S76 - I was using it as a preventative, and still lost about 10 birds to air sac mites. It was heartbreaking. I now use ivermectin as a preventative, and Scatt when I see an individual bird with symptoms or on new birds.

But isn't ivermectin the active ingredient in S76?

Did you use the S76 like it said here:
S76 when diluted in water only remains active for 7 to 8 hours. Therefore S76 needs to be administered in the drinking water two days per week for three weeks (21 days) in order to kill the life cycle of the airsac mites.
I have used this several times as a preventive seems to work for me sofar anyway :?:

I used it according to the directions, but it was as if I was giving them straight water. My thought is that it may be more diluted than the ivermectin I now use?

I used it according to those directions. I took the waterbowl away from my birds 30-45 min prior to putting it back with the added S76 - that way the birds were all eager to drink from it right away.

But it makes sense that it is not as effective as putting a drop of something directly on the bird - that you are able to give S76 even to very young birds may say something about how "mild" it is.
