Hi,

Today i noticed that there is a red lump right below the beak of one of my gouldians. There is no bleeding from it, but it looks kind of bloody red. From what I have read, it can be a TB(tuberculosis) infection. Have you guys had any experience with this ? If its some kind of TB infection, what kind of treatment would u recommend and where could I buy it ?

(That gouldian is eating and drinking well)

Thank you! :(

I'm not familiar with any kind of growths on birds. Are you sure it's not a seed shell/hull? Or a piece of red pellet? Have you had the bird long? Is it's fluffed up at all? If it's acting ill - remove it to a hospital cage and provide some heat.

Keep us posted.

Those are very good photos of the lump (your bird is so beautiful by the way). I was trying to research for some information but all I could find was a posting on a different bird forum that somebody else asked about a lump on a Gouldian beak but the only suggestion offered was to try swabbing some mite medicine directly on the beak to see if that would help but they never reposted to say if it worked or not. But the bump looked a little different than your birds.

You could go to this link http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/ and click on "Ask Dr. Rob" and maybe he can give you some advice.

I couldn't get the pictures to load, I think our firewall at work blocks webshots...

If you have access to an avain vet in your area (check your local yellow pages), I would recommend making an appointment.

Good looking bird. Could be a bruise under the beak. Beaks are just like fingernails, we often jam them or knock them and sometimes we can see blood patches underneath, they often take a while to go away, give it a couple of weeks, it should go away. the swelling is not irregular either.
The birds stance looks ok to me, nothing to worry about I think especially if the bird is eating and drinking ok.

One question, does the bird try to scratch the lump? If the bird doesn't feel any discomfort then your ok, but if it is scratching then maybe there might be an infection of some kind, let me know, what does it's poop look like also

he is doing fine........the lump seem to have reduced significantly now, but it is still visible.

No, he doesnt seem to scratch the lump anywhere, so I dont think he is even aware of it. He keeps singing most of the time and eats and drinks well. So i guess i will introduce my split to blue yellow back hen with that pastel cock to get some silvers :D

hi all,

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. My Pastel is fully recovered and the lump has disappeared.

And what makes me even happier is that my Pastel is breeding with a Split to blue yellow back and now sitting on 7 eggs. So I know I might get some silvers with that setting :D
