Eeeek! Beak??

Post by finchinista » Wed Jan 23, 2013 10:30 pm

so, my two rescue finches (both male) are settling in nicely, eating and grooming and bonding, and all appears to be well..... other than, just tonight, i noticed that Aramis has what looks like two small notches (one on each side) at the very tip of his beak. i haven't noticed him wiping or hitting his beak on anything- the two will sometimes nibble at each other a little bit, but nothing that looks violent. is this something to be alarmed at?? i am feeding them a diet of a seed/pellet mix, eggfood, greens and some veggies. any suggestions? he doesn't seem bothered by it, and is eating and acting fine, so i'm not sure if i should be freaking out or not :(

Can you get a photo? I'm having a hard time imagining what you're describing. The only thing about their diet that I think is missing is calcium. A nice mineral mix (not grit!) and a cuttle bone would be recommended to be provided. Good luck! :)

I agree, a picture would be helpful.
What type of finch are you talking about?

I believe the finches in question are societies (Bengalese), at least that is what I read from her introduction: http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=23580

:)

yes, sorry- i should have specified they are both societies. i will try and post a pic tonight.

they do have a cuttlebone and a mineral block - i have seen them nibbling at the cuttlebone at least. my husband and i were watching him last night, and he is definitely eating fine. my husband said he has noticed him rubbing his beak on the wood perches occasionally. maybe "notches" isn't the right word - it's almost like a layer has flaked off, like a fingernail? errr. i am having a hard time describing it, so i will get out my camera tonight :).

on a good note, there are no cracks or anything like that, so i very well may be freaking out for no reason. this is a lot like having a new baby, where you are not quite sure yet what to be alarmed about, and what is normal :).

i hope i did this right..... i took some pix of aramis' beak; he wasn't too cooperative when it came to sitting still (there goes his modeling career, i guess, haha) but i managed to get a couple. hopefully, this helps.

thanks again!
