Sorry you are having this trouble. If you cut the nails several weeks ago, you'd think she would be completely recovered by now. Is her breastbone sticking out sharply? Has she been eating? Perhaps it is something else that is affecting her, not the nail trimming. I have cut the nail too short before, did she really bleed a lot?

I'm wondering if something else isn't going on here. I normally don't use antibiotics unless I know what is going on, but maybe this would be a time to try? Unless she lost a lot of blood, she should have recovered just fine. When sending in blood samples for DNA testing, the recommended procedure for finches is to cut a nail short so that a drop or two of blood can be placed on the sample card to be sent in. This procedure doesn't bother them a bit.

Is there any way she could be eggbound? When a hen is on the bottom, I always suspect that. Is she puffed up, wings droopy, squinty eyes, just looking miserable? It wouldn't hurt to put a bit of heat on her and give her a drop of liquid calcium directly in the beak. As far as antibiotics, I do believe that many petshops carry an all-purpose one, but don't know the name of it. Maybe someone will chime in here. I wouldn't go out in the snow if you don't have to, though, so be careful.

Can't be the nails. I also cut my java's nail too short, she started bleeding and bit me so I let her go- I felt so guilty but she was fine an hour later. I had same problem with canaries in the past but the birds were fine. I think there must be something else wrong with your little birdie.

Keep her under a heat lamp, and keep the lamp on 24x7.
Give her fresh chopped up hard boiled egg. Egg is more nutritious than seeds. And sprinkle crushed egg shell in with the egg. That will get some calcium into her, but not as fast as the liquid.

I doubt that the nail trimming alone could have caused the problem. That being said, if she was already on the verge of coming down with something, the added stress may have helped to bring it on. OTC bird antibiotics were supposedly to have been outlawed a couple of years ago, but I'm noticing that some pet shops are begining to carry them again. I've had good luck with the ornacyn plus, but I add B12 and calciboost to the solution which will also sweeten it up a bit. Buy more than one box (unless your water dishes are very small) because you'll want to use it for at least 10 days. Bob
