Sick blue hen

Post by Gouldian4 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 1:43 am

Yesterday I notice that my female blue Gouldian was not coming out of the nest box which at first I thought she was being extremely good and sitting on her eggs really tight.

I came home yesterday afternoon and found the hen on the cage floor fluffed up. I immediately took her out and placed her in a hospital cage. I have given her liquid calcium as she has only just started sitting on 5 eggs. At first I thought that she was egg bound however I am now not sure that is the case.

She made it through the night and appeared a little better this morning however she is deteriorating quickly. Not eating or drinking and her keel bone is stiking out terribly due to loss of weight. I am hand feeding her and giving her water. She is so very weak!

Is there any thing else I can do??

Luke sounds like your doing great, hand feeding and giving her water along with heat there's not very much that can he done. Unfortunately birds are very stubborn when sick and will go without food and water. Another additional helping hand is to give her electrolyte drink this may just help give her that bit of hydration and energy. Missing weight like this can be many problems but the first that comes to mind is worms.

I'm so sorry :(
Going light in finches and canaries it is mostly caused by a parasite called coccidia though like Dan said it can be caused by many things.
best of luck
