We have a flight cage with 9 society finches. yesterday two of the finches died. 2 more look like they ore not doing well. any suggestions. I took out the food and water. cleaned the bowls with hot soapy water . rinsed them out thoroughly and replace it with different food. the only change was putting plexiglass on the lower half of the cage a week ago. I took down the plexiglass possibly thinking it could be from the glass. please help . A third died last night. Any help please, I am calling my vet but he is a general vet.

Where is the cage located?
If in the house, multiple deaths sounds like an environmental issue.
- any painting
- any use of scented products
- temp stable or changing

First of all, sorry for what you're going through. A little more background info would be helpful. How long have you had the finches prior to this happening? How big is the flight cage and where is it located? Did they show any subtle signs of illness or did they just go from seemingly healthy to dead overnight? If it was as sudden as it appears, I agree with ac12 - sounds like some kind of environmental issue. Bob

So sorry you are going through this. It is never easy to lose any of our finches, but when you have multiple deaths in one day, it can be devastating. I doubt it would be the plexiglass, I have used plexiglass panels on the bottom part of cages to keep my cats from grabbing a hapless finch.

I agree with the others, it very well could be environmental, especially if the cage is indoors. Cleaning products, overheated teflon pans, aerosols, scented candles, self-cleaning ovens, the list is almost endless of what can harm our birds. Do you have a gas furnace? Carbon monoxide detector? In the old days, miners took canaries into the mines with them, as the canaries were so much more susceptible to noxious gases. When the canaries died, the miners knew they needed to get out of the mine fast.
