I have two Gouldians (hen & cock) who I acquired in 2011; actually my first Gouldians. So I've had them 2 years.....at best they could be 3 or 4 years old. They are both in moult now & look like GARBAGE. Do "older" birds usually moult more extensively??????

About when they are ready to molt their feathers are duller and tatter but I wouldn't say they look like garbage. Other then the pin feathers and extra feathers on the aviary bottom you wouldn't know they were molting.

Well Debbie, maybe I was a little severe with the word Garbage  I just meant they looked really rough.

My canary is 11, and he's starting to go through his moult this year. It takes a lot more out of them in terms of energy and required rest, but they don't moult any harder then my other two birds - both star finches. Its feathers everywhere - from one end of the house to another!
