What drugs to use for Goulds

Post by finchandlovebird » Sat Mar 02, 2013 4:30 pm

I'm going to a bird fair tomorrow, and JUST IN CASE I find the kind of Goulds I'm looking for; I have a question about how to treat them in quarantine.

I have S76, have used it before & will use it again. Should I just do "in the water" treatment, or can this also be dabbed on their neck.

I have Avian Insect Liquidator. Should I use this too???

I also have a bottle of Enrofloxyn/Baytril 10%. I have no idea what this is & how/when it should be used.

Thanks for answers :D :)

Baytril I believe is a general antibiotic. I personally do not give my birds antibiotics unless I suspect a problem.

S76 can be administered topically, you have to do it for 5 days in a row. If you do it in the water, you administer it 2 days in a row for three weeks in a row. I am doing S76 right now for my whole flock--started yesterday, so I will do it again next Friday and Saturday, and the following Friday and Saturday. When I have to do a lot of birds, I prefer S76. If I am doing just a few, I like Scatt, as it is administered just once if it is part of quarantine.

Avian Insect Liquidator is wonderful for the premises, or even if you suspect lice/mites on some birds, as it can be sprayed directly on the bird. But I don't do this automatically as part of quarantine, only if I thought there would be a problem.

Everyone has different quarantine procedures, and you have to do what you are comfortable with. I used to go through a whole regimen when I quarantined, but now I just do Scatt, a wormer if I think the birds were in outside aviaries (or wild-caught), and then watch them closely for any signs of disease. I do give the new birds NV powder or an equivalent when they first come home, as they are stressed and need that extra boost.

Be sure and let us know what you get at the fair, and have fun!

I switched from S76 to SCATT for ASM.
It is easy to apply, and since I have to handle the bird (to clip the claws and band it) when I get him home, applying SCATT is not extra work. SCATT is 2 applications 3 weeks apart, so less work than S76.

I use S76 for my cages, where there are too many birds to individually treat with SCATT.

As with Sally, I use Worm Away.

But I also treat for other stuff (Baycox and Ronex) as part of my quarantine treatment.
