Sick gouldian help

Post by bdotan01 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 7:17 am

Hello all,

I really don't know what is wrong with my yellow Gouldian.
He sleeps most of the time; sometimes his eyes won't open even when I pick him up.
Only after I help him open them, he succeeds.
He seems weak. It has been going on for a long time now.
But, he is not puffed, not swollen or any thing...
Any Ideas?

Thank you.

If you can post a photo, it helps. Is he eating and drinking? Has he lost weight? What do his poops look like? Feather condition?

I can't say about his poop...
But, he eats fine and feathers looks OK.
He is young and molting.
He does seem to have lost some weight.

Molting is hard on Gouldians, especially the young ones. Are you giving him some extra protein now? Eggfood, either homemade or commercial, will supply him with the protein he needs to make new feathers.

You may need to add some electrolytes to the water, such as Thrive or even Pedialyte. If he is not getting his nutrition or is too weak during the molt to eat and drink, he'll get sick. I agree with Sally to give him crushed hardboiled eggs (shell too, crushed). Most finches will eat this even if not feeling well. I'd put a small paper plate of the eggfood, millet and a small dish of water, right next to the gouldian, so he doesn't have to go anywhere to get the food and water.
