Newly arrived Java Finch

Post by jack91 » Sun Apr 21, 2013 9:56 am

Hello folks,

I just got 2 Java Finches the other day, and one of them has been making coughing noises since I got it. It's like a coughing noise as though they have seed stuck, but sometimes when she breathes there is a clicking noise? I'm just a bit worried about her because the pet shop people couldn't catch them well and majorly stressed them out and now one of them has heart problems or something.

Thank you.

Jack

Welcome to the forum Jack.
I would let them settle in for a while and see if things improve.

Ah a bit upsetting she just passed away. She went to the bottom of the cage so put my hand in and picked her up without a struggle, stroked her head and she slowly went.

The only problem now is that the remaining 1 finch I have in the cage is stressing out because his mate is missing. I'm going back in the pet shop tomorrow to say what happened and to get another one.

This time though I'm going to ask her once it comes directly from the breeder to leave it in the box for me and phone me to collect it asap (as it's a minute away from my house)

That is terrible news - so sorry for the poor bird! Are you sure you want another one from that source? BTW, welcome to the forum. Bob

Jack,
I am so very sorry. That is awful. Sounds like air sac mites? I would treat your other guy and any new ones from this source with SCATT or S 76. My heart is broken for you. I am so glad you were there with her when she passed. :( Please let us know.

Thanks a lot folks I know a lot out there may say "It's just a bird" but the fact is they are lovely looking and sociable animals. As I'm sure a lot of you already know by the wealth of different types you have, you certainly get attached to them!

I will be more vigilant this time to try and look for any signs of illness, the other one I have has calmed down a bit now. There is a lack of information out there about these birds as I found personally but I was lucky to find this in a Google search eventually.

Cheers folks.

So sorry for your loss :( . Maybe you should hold off on adding a mate and treat the remaining Java first. Another option is keeping them in separate cages until a full coarse of S76 is complete. I also treat new birds with Mite/Lice spray and worm away. Best of luck...

I'm located in the north of the UK just below Scotland. I'm now dealing directly with the breeder who seems really nice and he seems to also think the pet shop owner stressed it out too much trying to catch it.

So will be getting a replacement directly from him minimising the stress of them trying to catch it out of a cage, as he owns an aviary with around 50 of them.

Whilst I'm on the subject of them, I was given a standard foreign finch mix which looks like budgie seed in a way. Is there any good formulations out there that provide nutrients (in addition to their daily greens)?

Thanks again.
