Found 2 little birds last night, what else can I do for them

Post by Casper » Tue Apr 23, 2013 7:41 pm

Last night, when we got home from walking the dog, my husband noticed a tiny little bird, it was picking at the seed my guys had tossed earlier, it was soaking wet and very cold, I picked it up without resistance. When I picked it up i noticed another bird, so i picked it up and took them both inside. I put them in our travel cage, I put in the heat pad, a fresh piece of millet and some water, then I covered the cage with a towel and put them in the laundry where it is quiet.

This morning they had stripped the millet and were happily sitting on the perch, they even made little noises when I uncovered them, they appear to be a pair of Goudians, one is a vibrant purple the other a duller red brown colour, I gave them some seed mix, fresh water and left the heat pad on and have come to work.

I assume that they are escaped pets since we don't get wild goudians this far south, they are friendly and seem happy, I have put a notice up on a couple of the lost pets sites, is there any thing else I can do?
Totally owned by a spoodle called Pepsi, 4 very cute zebra finches (2 fawn females, 1 ??? and 1 white male) and about 60 guppies! And loving every minute of it!

=D> What wonderful people to have rescued two little birds. Glad to hear they are doing well. Sounds like you have everything under control. Maybe some egg food (whole hard boiled egg including shell ground up) would give them some added protein for strength. Sprinkle some millet seed on top of it to peak their interest in it. The only other thing would be a heat lamp, but the heating pad may do the job. Good luck! Post pics if you can :D

Good on you for rescuing these two! =D> From the sounds of it, they are already on their way to being fit and healthy again. Well done :)

Update:

They are both still hanging in although they are still very weak! I have given them some Gastrolyte, that seemed to perk them up!

They are in rough condition, there feathers are grubby and they are extremely thin, but hopefully they will pull through it!

I made some egg and gave it to everyone today, my zebs really got into it but the other birds were not as enthusiastic but tha t could be because they were full of millet, my husband put another piece in for them this morning.

Still no contact from an owner, it they were mine I would be hunting high and low!

Those birds are probably very happy right now that you've found them. Maybe I'm just not picturing them correctly but they don't sound like gouldians to me. Can you post a picture?

I agree with Debbie, these don't sound like Gouldians.

A gould might have a purple breast, but that is all, never seen a red/brown gouldian.

Can yo upost pictures?

he had a warm bath yesterday and looks heaps better, from looking online I think he might be a java finch! but I dont know, the only clear photo I got is not a great one, he was taking a bath!

I will have another pass over the weekend!
