Tossed baby help

Post by finchfunaddict » Sat May 18, 2013 9:37 am

I need some emergency help. My RCCB babies are not being fed. I noticed lack of growth or what I thought might be lack of growth yesterday. I compared them to the gold breast that hatched a day later.Crops are now empty. She tossed one out this morning.I don't think I should place them in with the gold breast surrogates. Is there anything here at home I can feed them until I order something tomorrow...Should I try? I want to save these two tiny blues..Thanks lisa

Unfortunately, CBs are notorious for tossing babies, it is difficult to get them to parent-raise. Are you feeding mealworms? If not, are you feeding freeze-dried bloodworms (from the fish section of pet store)? How about eggfood?

You can try to handfeed them, here is an article on how to do it, plus a search of the forum will find lots of handfeeding info. You can get Kaytee handfeeding formula at most pet shops, Petsmart also usually carries Lafeber (which I prefer), or order other brands online.

In a pinch, you can try mashing the yolk of a hardboiled egg, thinning it with Pedialyte or plain water, and feed the babies using a flat toothpick.

Most every pet store carries hand feeding formula, that's what you should feed them.
best of luck

oops, I see Sally has already posted this info :)

Thanks sally, oddly enough my itty bitty petstore had kaytee. These babies definitely are NOT thriving. I only was able to get a tiny syringe but no silicone tip. So lets say feeding was messy and i only did it as a last resort. With the syringe without the tip I could not guide the food though one did well with my novice hands and his crop did fill up. So very small though compared to the gold breast and that shouldn't be. i have seen pics of CB's at 7 days old and nope...They looked so good a few days ago when I got a glimpse of them. i am going to do my best with what I have.Wish me luck....

oh and yes mealworms 3 times a day, bird corn bread 3 times a day and egg.Everything was good I am going to assume for 5 days. She is still taking care of them now but I am sure she will toss again. I was just going to use my incubator but if she will sit on them between feedings..Well...one won't make it for sure. Maybe a chance for the larger one..
