Strange Growth on Shaft Tail's Beak

Post by Ginene » Tue Jun 18, 2013 2:09 pm

I just found this growth on Juliet. It is in between her eye and her beak (closer to the beak). I put a drop of Sovereign Silver in her eye and also dabbed a drop on the growth. Any ideas on what it might be? I looked at the Troubleshooting Eye/Beak/Face Pictures on ladygouldian.com, but nothing looked like this...

Just wanted to add a few things to the post...I removed Juliet and Romeo from the long cage and put them back into their quarantine cage. Since Juliet is acting OK I figured she will be more comfortable with Romeo back in their old home. I put a heat lamp over a pedi- perch on one side of the cage. I also gave them fresh egg food and NV Powder in their water. As for the other birds in the long cage, I changed out all of their waters too and gave them NV Powder as well. I sent pics and an email to Laraine also. I'm hoping to get some feedback from her and you guys too. I will call my vet in the morning to see if I can bring her in.

Aw, Ginene, I really wish I had something valuable to contribute! I keep checking back to see if someone has given you an answer. I can only say (very unhelpfully) that I feel like I saw pictures that looked like this when I was researching finch illnesses for Cress. But when I tried to figure out which website I had viewed, I could not find it! It was probably something much more serious than what you are likely dealing with, anyway.

I am keeping you and Juliet in my thoughts! How long have you had her and when did you first notice the growth?

Good luck!
I'm really curious to see what the vet has to say - be sure to keep us posted.

I was also thinking I'd seen similar pictures, but coming up blank.
Sinus infection, maybe?

ps I totally sympathize with the hubby getting annoyed! I was preparing to spend much more money on Cress than he would have been comfortable with. I hope that you get some helpful info on here, or that if you do have to go to the vet, at least you leave with a solution!

Thanks Guys...Hubby is officially "mad" and thinks I'm nuts for taking her to the vet :( . I have had her for only 1 month. Teresa, on the Finch Forum, needed to rehome some of her birds and I took her Shaft Tail pair and her Spice finch pair. They are fantastic birds and seeing as I paid nothing for them, I think its only right that I pay a vet to find out what is happening with my Juliet. I am also concerned about her mate Romeo and the 4 other birds she was with from Saturday-Today. No answers, means all of the birds are at risk!!! I just hope the vet can help me. Many times they come up empty :( .

could it be related to the eye issue the canary had when you got it? :?:

I am sorry, now it seems you can't catch a break.... I am sure my turn will come soon.. :|

Don't think so...they are from 2 different places and were never housed together. I think it may be more of a skin or beak issue. I gave her another drop to the eye and also put more on the booboo. I guess I will be keeping that vet appointment tomorrow morning. Hubby is mad...but I don't really care  ...

Hi there,

don't feel guilty taking your birds to the vet, and you're not crazy doing do! I spend a small fortune on my birds - they're my pets! I had one of my aunts say 'I wouldn't spend more than the pets worth' in response to taking my birds to the vets, and then told her to mind her own business! What I (or you) chose to do, is your OWN business! Stuff what anyone else says! Good luck with your little one.

Thanks :) . Hubby just worries about money...I get it, believe me. Laraine said that it looks like tumor and she was emailing the photo to Dr Rob. I haven't heard back yet, but I hope to before my vet appt at 11am. I will keep you posted!!!

That is a very good illustration of the difference between people who see pets as property, and those who see them as family. I don't understand how someone can fail to see the inherent value of a life simply because it isn't human.

I think people tend to only take cats and dogs to the vet...And I know some people who don't even do that. EVERYONE thought we were nuts for taking our Guinea Pig to the small animal vet. You had to see the looks we were getting from the other people at the Vets office. Lol!!! That's why I was surprised when my husband was annoyed. I think it was the initial shock though, because he's already over it. I'm glad because she is going regardless...and now I don't have to see him shake his head and roll his eyes at me...
