Finger fell off

Hello,

I was clipping my Gouldian finch's fingernails yesterday and he pulled his leg back forcefully.
After that happened I noticed he was missing a finger and was bleeding.
I stopped his blood with powder but he remained on the cage floor all night.
What have I done wrong?
I feel terrible about it.

Thanks.

Sounds like it got in the way of the clipper. Don't beat yourself up, accidents happen. I have a gouldian who got his foot caught in the nest when he fledged, it broke a toe, and it eventually dried up and fell off, so he has a missing toe, and does just fine.

Thanks. Did your bird reproduced after the accident?

Birds will do just fine without one or more toes, or even the whole foot or leg, they adapt quite well. He will be able to reproduce just fine. The biggest worry when something like this happens is getting the bleeding stopped, as they can't spare that much. You did that, and now I would rest this bird, pamper him for a few days, he should be fine.

My bird is just finished his first molt. Too young to breed yet.

Hay!
Thank you both.
For sime reason my finch has not taken flight yet.
He remains on the cage floor.
He attemps to fly up with no success.
What could be the problem?

Thanks again.

It's difficult to tell why your bird might not be flying without being there to see it. It could be the foot is painful to land on. If it is eating and drinking well and looks otherwise healthy, I might provide it with a platform or wide perch set lower in the flight and see how he does.

If, however, it seems too weak to fly to a perch, it may have other problems and a visit to a veterinarian might be in order.

Hoping your bird improves soon!

I can see how that happened.
I have to be VERY careful when I clip a claw that one of the other toes does not get into the clipper. It is quite easy to happen.
