Gouldian wing problem

Post by bdotan01 » Tue Jul 30, 2013 2:10 pm

Hello,

After i accidentally clipped my gouldian finch toe, he has stopped flying.
His right wing is dropped down all the time and he tries not to use it.
He looks week.
His leg looks just fine now, so I don't know what is causing the flight problem.
Plus - I think he started molting.

Please help.

Thank you.

Could you have clipped part of the wing too? Is he really stressed? Molting is stressful on finches, especially gouldians. Offer heat on one side of the cage and watch the droppings, just in case he is sick. If nothing else appears in a day or two, he's probably stressed.

There is a chance that during the handling of him to clip his nail he could have twisted his wing. It happens easily as they are so tiny. Just carefully check him over to make sure nothing is more seriously wrong (like a dislocation). If he can extend his wing and the joints don't look obviously swollen you are probably ok on that front.
Sometime just catching them up they get a wing or leg stuck in the oddest of places and do minor damage to themselves.
Just make sure he has warmth, food and water low down and easy to reach. Give him at least a week to recover from a strained wing. Try keep his cage partially covered to give him privacy as this will help with stress too.

Hope he gets well soon.

Thanks!

He still has problem flying.
One wing looks paralyzed.
I'll give it some time and hope he gets better.
