Forbes Cock Injured by Own Beak?!
I found my Forbes cock with his beak stuck into his chest. I removed the beak and it was long, Again! I trimmed the beak about a month ago, but it still grows to a needle point, either on the top beak or, this time, on the bottom of the beak. He is having trouble flying and is sitting on the bottom of the hospital cage. About two weeks ago, he had trouble flying, but I noticed he'd lost his tail feathers. I gave him Feather Fast and the feathers grew in and he as flying better the last two weeks. However, today he is not flying well. Not sure if he was just shocked by the injury to himself by his beak or is he is sick. Anyone have ideas what causes a beak to become overgrown repeatedly? The hen does not have this trouble and I have natural stones, pedi perch and cuttle bone in the cage. Thanks.

Sounds like something nutritional. Any chance he could have parasites? I'd check with a vet about this as clearly something is going on and if he is managing to injury himself it's not a minor issues.

My forbes hen is forever losing her tail feathers. I have been told that it is common for this to happen, but not so sure that is true. It has problems flying around in the aviary sometimes and I make sure it has food and water on the floor, but then in a few days it is flying again....I hope your does okay and recovers!

Thanks.
He may have been stunned. He perked up a little and drank some water just now. I'm watching him closely.

What a ghastly thing to have happen! Don't know why or how. Could it be some kind of metabolic issue being as the beak is growing more rapid than normal and frequent loss of tail feathers? Weird. Poor bird, poor you for having found him like that.

My Mother's old canary was a gloster and he had several genetic problems - feather cysts, and his upper beak would overgrow. We had to get the bird vet to trim it frequently. He also had cysts removed quite a lot from both wings.
