Hidden danger:Found my parakeet hanging by wicker munch ball

I came into the room to find my parakeet hanging by a loop of his wicker munch ball that he pulled out from the rest of the ball. He would have been dead shortly if I didn't see him. The toy came with him from the previous owner and always gave me an uneasy feeling. I was worried about him swallowing pieces. Kept running the scenario over in my mind and dismissing it. I now know it was an inner voice...a warning to remove it. I will attach a picture of the balls, and a picture of how they are sometimes stacked, though this is not the exact picture of his toy, but it is similar to it.

The canary that I spoke of in a different post, got his band caught on a wicker canary nest and had to have his foot amputated. You can NEVER account for all the unforeseen possible dangers. Bob

Glad you saw him in time.

I see those toys as more of a shredding toy for bigger parrots. I use plastic JW toys in my cages.

Even the little cat toys with the metal bell inside can be a bit risky, had a keet get a toe stuff in the bell.

Cindy, this parakeet...Jo Jo keeps us on our toes! He's used 3 of his lives already! First, the "hanging" then he flew into the washing machine, into 2 inches of soapy water. His wings were clipped so I thought he couldn't. I thought he flew behind it. Thank God I checked inside...on a hunch. I also started to fill it and for some reason shut it off or it would have been full. The other night he choked on a millet spray. He choked for 5 minutes. He was breathing but opening his mouth wide and gasping then frantically wiping his beak and repeating everything. I finally took him out and turned him faced downward and lightly tapped on his back until he stopped gasping. I feel like I have to watch him every second because he's really mischievous. I worry about giving him the millet. He's had it before, but choked on the second little seed. Weird! :(

gotta get the really cheap ones that don't have the bell. and make sure the holes are round holes, not slits, which can trap a toe if it slides in and up into the narrower part.

Good thing you came in time.
Seems like bird toys will just be more trouble than it is worth.
