Gouldian Hen with leg injury -- advice needed

I have a Gouldian Hen who has injured her leg sometime in the past few days. (We were gone this weekend, so I don't know exactly when it happened) She has a band, but the leg that she injured was her unbanded leg. She has some dried blood near the top of the leg and the lower part of the leg has turned black and is dangling unusuable. She seems fine otherwise, chipper and eating, but the leg is obviouslyl getting in her way. We have NO avian vets anywhere near us. Should I just watch her and see what happens, or amputate the blackened part of the leg. I am also thinking I should remove the band on her good leg as it is her only working leg and would hate to see it get caught and injured.
She is my recently acquired Split to Blue hen. So dissapointed she got hurt.

That stinks, Lori! Sorry to hear. I've only dealt with this a couple of times. One time, I left it alone and it fell off on its own. Another time, I cut it off. Both had the same result. :| Hopefully, others with more experience will chime in here.

Your idea to remove the band from the other leg is a good one.

Sorry this happened.

Am mostly worried that the usless leg will keep getting caught on things.

So sorry :(
If the black leg is in the way I would snip it off.
good luck

Have never done this before, am a bit squeamish about it, afraid I'll hurt her, or clip in wrong place...... Have you ever done it? I will try to post pics tonight, maybe get some advice on where to clip.....

If it is a very recent injury just check for blood vessels and try not get too close to healthy area. They can lose a fair amount of blood if cut incorrectly. Generally I personally like to wait a while to see how the injured bird copes and adjusts as sometimes this dictates what is best to do or where best to amputate. sorry so hear though. It always seems to happen when you need it least.
