Wet, swollen vent but not egg bound

Hello friends!

I have a new female normal black head green back lady gouldian finch. She has a swollen, wet, red vent. She is eating well but you can tell it is bothering her, she is trying her best to clean it. At first, I feared she was egg bound, but the area is soft, no egg. Her "poop" appears very normal, if not maybe too large. She was sold to me with her mate - they may have been housed together - as she does have feathers missing from around the sides of her head around the ears. Her beak is dark grey, ready to mate.

I am hoping it is just that she had a bad diet (I do not know her past). If she has worms, would it make her excretions look abnormal? I am planning on treating both of them for mites using SCATT. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what it might be that I can treat her for?

a regular preventative deworming is a good idea. However she could also just be getting ready to lay. If she is eating and acting normal plus her poop shows nothing alarming I would say leave her alone and see what happens before giving meds for anything you not sure of.

Debbie - It does not look like the pictures of the prolapse. Her vent is very clearly visible though, like in picture 4 after the re-insertion success. It is definitely bothering her, she keeps trying to get back there to clean it, bounces a little afterwards, and it bobbing her tail. It looks just like when my only egg-bound problem happened, but there is definitely no egg there.

I will go to work right now so that I can try to get a picture posted ASAP.
I have an order ready to place for SCATT and Calcium Plus. Please let me know if anyone recognizes these symptoms and what I need to get, if anything else.

Thank you for letting me know about the pictures! I can see them but it looks like I'm the only one! Her vent is much less swollen now, but it still is bothering her, as she is picking at it to the point of a small amount of blood. I have already treated her with Scatt and Worm Away...Ronivet is on order and should be here today. I talked with a long time breeder and she thinks it sounds like cochlosoma - especially with the "butt pumping".

Signs of Canker/Cochlosoma include: diarrhea, yellowish or bright green droppings, undigested seed in droppings, butt pumping, wet vent feathers, sleeping during the day, head tucked over their wing feather, weight or feather loss.

She is butt pumping and has wet vent feathers. What else could it be?

That's a lot more then wet vent feathers to me.

Good luck and hope you can find some treatment for her. I can't tell what are the symptoms exactly by the pic you posted sorry , maybe contact Vet or like Debbie mentioned by email to the link above. Keep us posted. Bless her

For the immediate future, I am going to treat as a protozoan infection with the Ronivet. Don't know yet how long it takes to work, but I definitely will keep everyone posted. So far, I have treated her with Scatt, Worm Away (no worms found before or after treatment), and gave her a drop of Calcium Plus today.

The yellow color of the abdomen, along with the butt bouncing and swollen vent leads me to believe this is a protozoan infection. I'm glad I got her regardless because now she has a chance, I just hope she hasn't had it too long for her insides to not recover.
