Had a huge scare this morning.

Post by Chirpington » Sat Nov 09, 2013 3:29 pm

As some of you know I just got two 6 month old gouldian finches on Thursday. This morning I was putting food in their cage and one of them managed to fly out! He made a lap around the main floor, and before I had the chance to close the living room drapes he flew right into the window!
He dropped to the floor and was just laying there on his side  I picked him up and could feel him breathing. So I put him in a box and hoped and prayed he would come too.

After about 10 min he was on his feet and in another 10 min his eyes were opened. So I but him back in the cage and he was perching :) Now I've seen him eating and drinking so I'm hoping he's going to be ok.

I feel so bad that I wasn't more careful. Do you think he'll be ok? He looks fine right now, maybe not quite as active as he usually is.

This little guy has had quite the life so far. I was told his parents flung him out of the nest a few times before they excepted him, he has two toes missing, and now he flies into a window!

I had others to choose from but this little guy stole my heart :)

He sounds like he is well on the way to recovery. Accidents do happen, there is no way to predict them all. And our finches are quite adept at escaping when we open the cage door to do food/fwater. Because they are so small, it is easy for them to squeeze right past our hands.

Yes that's true. I think I was so use to my canary. He never attempts to escape.
He's sleeping now and seems to be ok. I'll be keeping a close eye on him tomorrow. He gave me a good scare that's for sure.

Thanks for asking :) He seems to be getting better every day. Today he's a lot more active and is eating even more then yesterday.
I imagine they are no different then we are when we get a concussion. It takes us a long time too :)
I'm just so thankful it wasn't worse. He could of broke his neck.

I had a little gouldian fledging to run into a window one morning. It hit the floor and was spinning like a top... scared me to death. I picked it up and held it a minute or so until it calmed down. I had no choice but to leave it in the aviary on the floor that morning and go on to work. Since the parents were feeding it I couldn't do anything else. I worried myself sick all day and went straight to the aviary when I got home just sure it would be dead. There it was... sitting on the perch looking great. They can sometimes recover from these accidents. So glad your's did... and mine too!!!

Thank you dfcauley, I'm so glad your little one was ok as well. It's amazing what they can sometimes survive. I have witnessed some wild birds fly into our window that were not so lucky.

Chirpington It definitely happens. I lost my favorite Zebra 'Charlie' when he snuck by my hand and flew out a window.... Broke my heart. :(

I am glad your bird is ok! It is a lucky bird, having you! Even with it's missing toes, it is in great hands! =D> =D>
