BCCB: Puffy & Soiled Vent

So, Ernie (BCCB) has been puffy for about 1 week now, but has been eating, drinking, and perching like normal. He has not been as active as he usually is. This afternoon I noticed that his vent is slightly soiled (has been perfect before today), but there aren't any "sick looking" poops in the cage. On Saturday, I put a heat lamp near a high perch in the flight, but he doesn't use it. I also put NV Powder in the water tubes this Saturday (to give him a little boost) and put a pinch of Probiotics into the fresh kale and egg food (on Sunday and Tuesday). I haven't put him into the hospital cage yet, as he adores his brother and the mixed flight is very peaceful. But I think I will move hime tomorrow in case he has something. I'm wondering if I should give him a broad spectrum antibiotic (Ornacycline). I also have Erythromycin and Ronex. I have a feeling I will be at the avian vet this weekend...

Hi Ginene,
Even your bird seems not sick, and still able to eat etc. I still think maybe it's a good idea to put him in a hospital cage, so he can stay peaceful and quiet. Most of birds don't show their weakness and try to hide it from others. In your case, I suggest you can use the Ornacycline- which I used that for my finches before by put little bit in the water, I use it for healthy birds too.
I am not sure about Erythromycin:/ but for RONEX- I heard this can be use only treatment for cankers, giardia and other protozoal infections. If you don't know your birds have any symptoms like that, maybe not use it until you talk to the Vet.
Good luck to your bird and hope he will doing fine.

Make sure he is not stress inside the cage since other birds around him now.

Why would you give healthy birds an antibiotic?

Sorry to hear you boy is ill.
It is best to know why your little bird is sick as it will help you choose the best medicine for it.
Ornacycline would seem like you best general broad spectrum anitbiotic.
Erythromycin (I'm not familiar with) but it states its for acute bacterial infections. So its rather specific and probably stronger than a broad spectrum.
Ronex is for protozoa infections.
Your boy could be suffering from any number of things as his symptoms are quite common to a few diseases. So perhaps a professionals advice would be best and you could help you little one get better faster. In the past I've tried self diagnosis, but inevitably a vet is needed or someone that can give you good experienced guidance on recognizing symptoms, if a vet is not around. The cost of the vet is usually out-weighted by the total cost of all the meds you purchase and if they are unsuccessful the cost of replacing your bird. You can do more harm than good just administering a stream of meds in the hope one would work.
I find the BC's usually hide their ailments well, so you don't have much time to give them aid when they do show signs.
Best of luck.

I agree about the vet and not self prescribing in this case. Treating with an antibiotic can cause further complications since certain antibiotics treat certain bacteria better than others. You can literally weaken the bird.
Are you feeding watery veggies daily?

Thank goodness for Su Yin

. She gave me advice on how to treat him and Geri (owl hen) who has a horrible injury to her beak courtesy of Bert. Both birds are individual hospital cages. So far, so good...but the avian vet is only 10 minutes away. Thanks for asking about your thought! Xoxo
