Eye Infection not improving this time around

Post by Corkysgirl » Sat Nov 23, 2013 8:04 pm

My old female zebra gets a yearly eye infection. She's been treated with various treatments, colloidal silver, a prescription for drops via the Avian Vet, Amoxitex, and this time...for the last 9 days Doxycycline at the suggestion of Ladygouldianfinch. She said it was a cold in her eye. She never gets respiratory issues with it, and it's always the same eye. It's runny, crusty, and she itches it constantly. In the morning it looks better but by night's end it's rubbed raw again. She responded to the Amoxitex which cleared it up last year but getting it back once again, I decided to bring out the bigger guns. I see no real improvement. After nine days, do you think I should go back to Amoxitex or continue on with the Doxycycline? Any other ideas? She seems miserable. Her feet are peeling also. It's her only other symptom which she never had previously. She's lost some weight but is still acting fine other than her eye. Also, she has had birds in with her who never caught this seeming infection. I have a call in to Ladygouldian and am waiting for a call back. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm assuming by what this link says that I'm not having the positive response after 3 days...so to me that means it's not working. It's not saying what to do from there but I think 9 days is enough to determine that it probably won't. I am going to try the Amoxitex again and go from there. I'm open to any other suggestions. I still haven't heard back from ladygouldianfinch.

Ladygouldian and ladygouldianfinch are different places so I'm confused which your in contact with. That article came from ladygouldian, if that's not who your in contact with I would try there, Laraine answers pretty quickly.
good luck

I didn't realize that. I looked up Ladygouldianfinch and saw the picture of Joanne and that's who I've been dealing with...getting meds from. I tried calling Laraine...not available right now, so just sent her an email. Thanks for letting me know. I did switch her to Amoxitex last night and bleached her perches, etc. where she rubs her face/eye and cleaned her nest where she sleeps.

Thanks Debbie! Laraine wrote back and said it was the right thing to do to switch her back to the Amoxitex. The Doxycycline was most likely not the right antibiotic and it's most likely strep/staph which Amoxitex covers. Also to put colloidal silver drops in her eye. She is NOT going to like me but I have to do what I have to do. I'm praying this works! She's my girl! [-o<
