Cataracts in Society Finches

Well, I've read about the potential vision problems with White Society finches, especially red eyed whites . I have an albino cock, who is about 4-5 years old. This week, I noticed tiny white spots in the center of both his eyes and he doesn't perch much and sits on the bottom of the cage to sleep, instead of on the platform or nest etc. He is not sick. He just can't see and doesn't know what is where... Poor thing! He turns his head around and acts scared at any noise near his cage. I'm not sure if there is anything I can do to help him, so if anyone has dealt with the loss or dimished eyesight in finches, please tell us your advice! Thanks.

I purchased and shipped in a group of white societies a while back. A few had severe cataracts and looked like yours but worse. I used a small cage for them and had many low perches that crossed and formed a web. The birds adapted well and learned to find the food and water.

I have also heard that with red eyed birds that sunlight and bulbs that are like sun sticks can also contribute to the clouding or cataracts. I will see if I can find the article for you...it is like for humans that are albino...they need to protect their eyes while in the sun.

I purchased a pair of lutino lovebirds few years ago. Male lovebird had similar problem in both eyes & he died within a week after purchase. The lady who sold me the pair via craigslist never told me about the condition of the bird. According to her ad, lovebirds very healthy, active, & confirmed pair. She just sent me some unclear pictures of the lovebirds, never gave me her home address or phone number, met with me at a public place. She brought the birds in a very small cardboard box. I just peaked in the box from a small opening and purchased the pair for $100. Later when I came home put the birds in a cage, I noticed it immediately that the male lovebird could not see properly. I contacted that lady several times via email but she never replied me.

Charlie- I do have him in a handicap cage already. Today, he went onto the platform perch. I'll add some lower perches etc.

Cindy- I'd love to read that article. He has been under UVA/UVB lights most of his life, so that could be a contributing factor. At this time of year, he is under a red heat bulb.

I just hate to see my once vibrant and active finch, sitting on the floor and/or looking scared at any sound because he can't see. Poor thing. He's one of our favorite Society's. He has such a cute personality.
