Nostril cracked?

Post by LadyGMom » Wed Jan 29, 2014 4:53 pm

I am not sure what this is or if it is a part of his nostril peeling off which would be normal? I have not ever seen this before this close to the nostril with larger parrots in which that is what I have been use to for the last 30 years plus ( now that tells you my age hahaha!) I need to know if it is the beginning of something so I can get him to my vet asap before it gets out of control and then I might not be able to help him. He eats great and sings great so I am at a loss and need some help :?

No body knows what this could be? My red head does not have anything like this on him but now all he wants to do is sleep so I guess a vet visit is in order.

Could it be scaly mites? Maybe just the beak shedding, though it does look irritated where the beak meets the feathers.
Here's a web link that may help:

A vet may be the way to go though
good luck

How is your Gouldy boy doing? Hope its nothing major. He is very beautiful. As for having had birds for 30 years. LoL. My guess is that you've had birds since you were in the cradle, right? ;-) Good luck with your little boy.

What a gorgeous boy! He looks in great feather condition.
To be honest I don't see too much going on. If you treat for mites as a preventative it can do no harm, but it looks to me like he's shedding his beak.
It's an alarming thing to see the first time. Gouldian have quite a pronounced shed.

Thank you! It was just a shed. I am so relieved....I did go ahead and order mite sac treatment just incase and I bought some neem oil and antibiotics etc. I shopped at LadyGouldian store online. Neat store! Lovezebs I am going on 53 years old so I have had birds since I was in my very early teens. My first bird was a male pied cockatiel that I had for 27 yrs. Thanks ladies :) Now I want to get 2 more birds to house with these 2 LG boys, can I possibly put 2 Cordon Blue males?

Great. Glad it was just a normal moult.

I would be unsure of keeping two male CB's. I have done so in the past and had ok results, but I have a very large aviary. Gouldian are very relaxed birds and quite different. Waxbills are very busy and need space and privacy to feel comfortable plus not become aggressive for territory.

Depending on your set up or breeding intentions... why not get two Gould girls to keep the boys company?
OR maybe two more boys with different colour mutations.
