Pecking at foot

Post by rancho2 » Fri Mar 14, 2014 11:21 am

One of my society males keeps pecking at his foot/feet. it doesn't look like anything is on his foot. I dosed everyone with Scatt a week ago so if it's mites do I still need to do something else with him?

I would check closely, use a magnifying glass if you need to, and just be sure there is no hair or thread wrapped around his toe or foot.
If you used Scatt it shouldn't be mites.
good luck

I have experienced this same behavior with my zebra Kuri.. she quite frequently bites and pecks at her feet. I am not sure why.. I have treated her with Ivermectin in water and topically before.. and used mite spray. The other day it looked as if she was picking off dry skin? I am wondering what it could be.. and maybe it is similar to what you are experiencing?

Does your bird bathe often? Are the nails needing to be clipped, the foot and toes might feel uncomfortable it the nails are curved to much.

cindy not sure if you were asking me.. but my bird bathes a lot.. but she packs at her legs and sometimes her toes mostly. Never by the nail.. and her nails seem to be a normal length. Recently on one foot it looks swollen and inflamed between two of her toes.. possibly from her picking at it.. and on the other foot on the bottom of her back toe there is a spot that looks like a swollen, blackish callous like scab?

Maybe a slight cut or sore that has become infected?? Or bumblefoot?

debbie276 I hope it's not bubble foot!! I always thought maybe she had dry or sensitive skin but I dunno. I will definitely keep an eye on it though. I just always thought I was the only one with s bird who attacked her feet!
