Zebra doesn't hold wings tight

Post by Barb » Wed May 14, 2014 10:04 am

I purchased to 2 male Zebra finches from Petsmart. One is very active, sings and hops around. The other in more docile and just beeps. He eats and drinks really good, moves around, not as much as the other one but was kind of fluffed up, sleeps with head back.

So per Petsmart contact I took him back and they had their bird vet observe him overnight and for a day. They said he is fine, so I brought him back home but he doesn't hold his wings up tight like the other finch.

Anyone had this and what does it mean? Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

How long have you had him for? Sometimes new birds take a bit of time to settle down. During this period of moving them to a new environment they can sit fluffed and have droopy wings. However not for too long. Only a day or two.
Sometimes when they catch them they inadvertently sprain their wings slightly. This takes time to heal.

In the mean time try offer him some extra heat. (lamp near cage or something) and maybe some vitamins.

If it continues, then he may have an underlying ailment that has not necessarily shown itself properly.

I've had them for 13 days now. I did put a warm light over him and he seemed to like that and gave him pedilite in the water. He has gotten better but still had the vet check him out Monday and Tuesday, then brought him home last night.

He eats and drinks great, I give them seed, egg food, hard boiled egg, lettuce, sprouts, oyster shell. I ordered Vionate vitamins that Sally suggested in another post.

I realize they will have different personalities, but still not sure. He is never on the bottom of the cage.

Maybe a photo or video might help?

I had one young finch whose wing hung down. He didn't fly and stayed on the bottom of the cage. I assumed he fell out of the nest and hurt it trying to fly. I kept him warm...extra heat, etc. and after about a week realized it wasn't going to get better. His wing wasn't broken. It didn't hurt him when I slowly opened it. I would sit him in the palm of my hand and very easily lift my hand up and down just once at first to cause him to open his wings, then twice the next day and work up. His wings would open just a little at first because he would feel like he was falling. I worked with him 3 weeks working up to full wing strength and his wing no longer hung. One day I went in and he was up on the really high perch, flying from then on. I had to do this with one other bird and it was successful also. It did take three weeks before I saw an improvement in the hanging though..so it may take a little time.
