Swollen wing

Post by lpappy » Wed Jul 30, 2014 7:19 pm

Well it's been several weeks since I've been watching my gouldians wing. It still seems red and swollen right along the outside of the wing and right to her body. There aren't any other feathers missing then the few that have been gone. She's eating and flying up to her favorite swing. Could she have possibly injured it during a night fright or something? She takes a bath and seems fine but I'm a little concerned. There doesn't appear to be any injury that I can see. Any thoughts?

If she is eating and active, I'd just watch and see how she does, but if the wing looks bad, you could always put a small bit of neosporin or Quick Gel on the red area.

Thanks Deborah! I think I may put some neosporin on it tomorrow. It's just red and a little swollen all along the underside of her one wing. The feathers look good so I don't think it's mites. There isn't any sign of a cut or infection. It's just along the edge of the underside of the wing. She flies so it can't be broken and it looks perfectly normal. The only way I noticed it is there is a few feathers missing where I see some redness. There isn't any sign of any injury at all and that's what puzzling. Thanks for your help. I read the forum constantly. It's the best source of information and everyone is so knowledgeable.
Thanks again

Another thought, is another finch plucking her feathers? That irritates the skin too. Also, just put a tiny amount of neosporin on the spot so her feathers don't get stuck together and she cant fly. Another option for inflammation is Metacam, which is an antiinflammatory for pain and swelling. My vet made a small bottle for my finch and it helped her so much. I gave 0.01 cc to the beak for pain.

I actually watched for anyone picking on her and there isn't anyone bothering her at all. I put some neosporin on her this morning and she is flying so I guess I did ok. I don't have any of that medication but I have some other types but they are mostly for internal issues and mites. I'll try the neosporin and see how she does. She doesn't seem to be in any pain or distress and is eating like normal. I'm wondering if she hurt it possibly as a night fright. Thank you for all of your help and i'll keep you posted.

Maybe she got her wing caught in between the cage wires & injured it.

That's what I was thinking wildbird. It looks more like a injury to me. And the fact that she uses the wing tells me it isn't broken.

Well it's been almost a month since my last post on my gouldians wing. It basically looks the same. Still swollen along the edge as if she injured it somehow. There are feathers beginning to grow back along the edge. She's eating but spends a lot of time resting by the heat lamp. Just when I think she's not looking good she starts moving around the cage and eating non-stop. She does get up to perch at night but doesn't make much of an effort all day. I've been keeping food and water on the bottom when she can get it easily and put in a low perch which she was using but now goes up to the regular perches at night. i've been giving her eggfood daily with vegetables and featherfast sprinkled into it. I checked on the lady gouldian site and they have a picture of exactly what her wing looks like and said it's probably a injury. I'm not sure how long this should take to heal but she's hanging in there.
