RTPF with a sore eye

I moved my 2nd lot of birds 3 days ago from a small aviary to their aviary in it's new location. (I had to move my aviaries away from my neighbours wall.) When I had the birds in the new aviary, I saw that the one RTPF hen was looking a bit off. She had her head tucked under her wing. The next day I saw that she had her one eye closed. It didn't look like there were any physical damage, tears or blood discharge. Before I moved them, I never looked carefully at the birds before I caught them up, so her eye could have been hurt before the move, but I think that is unlikely. Every time I go into the aviary, she opens both eyes to be able to see the dangerous human better, but as soon as I leave, she closes her left eye. I think that if she is still keeping her eye close tomorrow that I must catch her and wash out the eye with Natural Tears. She is eating and drinking. I have not seen her bathing though. Today was really hot, about 33 Celsius, she would normally have bathed to cool off.

MariusStegmann...I had a canary with a similar eye issue and used Colloidial Silver to heal it. I purchased it from amazon.com. I put 1 drop in his eye in the morning & evening, and gave him 1 drop by beak (using a sterile pipette) daily too. It healed beautifully! This is the link to the one I purchased. It is known to be a natural/homeopathic medication. I use it on birds that are "off" and also to clean/treat wounds. It hasn't let me down yet...but I do still consider myself a newbie :)

Oh Marius, you didn't smack another one with your net , did you??? You're becoming quite Infamous around Finch Circles, as the scarey human with the dangerous net.

I hope your girl's eye feels better soon. I will often try strong cold tea with eye problems, although haven't had to use it on birds yet. The tannin in the tea, is soothing for irritated eyes.

lovezebs No Elana, I am innocent this time. I did the chasing part, my son did the net work.

Ginene Thx Ginene, I will see what I can buy locally. If I order the medicine, it won't arrive in time.

Marius, we do get Colloidial Silver here. Used it before for the horses and I 'think' we got it from Dis-Chem.

Another good wash for eyes is rooibos tea, cooled. We used to use the tea bags for the horses with an eye irritation. Obviously you can't hold the whole teabag on a finches eye but I would recommend softly dabbing her eye with it or a cloth soaked in it. It really works well and is easy to source for us here in SA.

Rox beat me to it. Cold black rooibos tea, you can wash the eye out with a syringe. Works wonders for mild infections. I've also used it on my birds, dogs and horses in the past. Always offers cool relief and clears up minor infections almost overnight. Magic in a tea bag.

I caught the hen and examined the eye. It looked like there was a small milky spot in the middle of the eye. I think that she is not complete blind in the eye yet, but she is probably going blind in that eye. This enforced aviary move is just the gift that keeps on giving.

Ai Marius, it really has caused a lot of problems for you :( I really hope that all your birds settle down now and that there are no more injuries!

Rox I just have a pair of canaries on eggs and a pair of your Gouldians that are raising 3 youngsters in the remains of the old aviary. They started off with 6 but 3 died. The parents were not feeding all the chicks enough. They are first time parents and there were a lot of commotion going on around them, with the aviaries being made smaller and parts of it being moved. The gouldians are quite near to fledging. I will move them as soon as the chicks have been out of the nest for about a week.

A spot in the middle of the eye? Is that infection? Or some sort of a defect in the eye?

Yes, this move has been difficult for you and your birdies. Let's hope things settle down now, as everything gets back to normal. Good luck with baby Gouldians and up coming Canaries.

P.S. So the net thing runs in the family?!!! :-D

Ginene Thx Ginene - stay warm with all the cold weather that you are having.

@lovezebs Elana it is not an infection. The eye is looks healthy apart from the small white spot on the eye.

PS. Leave my family alone, [-X you are not to old for a good old spanking! =D>
