fluffed up face rubbing canary help??

Post by cleigh9579 » Tue Feb 10, 2015 11:08 am

I recently bought/saved a female canary from an over crowded small flight cage. She was at a trade day me and friends went to. She was in a small single flight cage with 6 other canaries. I know im a sucker. She is a pet only.

My concern is she seemed very healthy and active in the small cage but now that she is in a 3ftx4ftx2ft cage she is not.
The symptoms she has are : Fluffed up,large ball of feathers. Staying in one spot close to the wall. Mild face rubbing. And tail bobbing.

she seems to like looking outside when i open the blinds. She hops on her perch and calls some. She appears normal when doing this. Feathers are sleak and no face rubbing.

I am at a loss.
Could she be lonely? ?? She calls a lot and mumbles a half song.

Any help or opinions are greatly appreciated

** i maybe a worrier. This morning she is flitting around the cage. Calling and singing to the outside birds and acting normal. I have had her since Sunday evening. Could she just be adjusting??

cleigh9579...Ok...I do not know much about diagnosing sickness in birds, but all of those symptoms scream sick bird to me. Especially the tail bobbing. If you have a heat lamp or heat emitter, put it on her cage so she can sit under it. She's puffing up to keep warm. Also add electrolytes to her water and try to get her to an avian vet :)

I thought she was sick as well. After 2 days she did a complete turn around. (she is no longer in an over crowded flight with 5 other birds). She now has a huge flight, good seed, fresh water, fresh veggies and fruits, and a good bath. She sings her broken beautiful little song almost non stop in day light hours. I have added a small space heater to her side of the room. My room is the coolest. she really enjoys her bath and fresh parsley seems to be her favorite so far. I am just happy that she is such a happy little soul. :D

Hello firstly since she is new then yes there's a chance that she is adjusting to a larger space and new environment with new sounds and smells. This is the time if she was hiding any sickness they will raise their ugly head. As there is a chance of a sickness arising and stress levels also rising I would consider a sheltered area of a cage with a towel or similar draped over the side and part roof to give her some privacy of all the new things get a little too much. Heat source can help a lot with a new bird as fluffing is usually the first sign that the bird is trying to keep warm. Electrolytes in the drinking water is also a great help as ginene has also said. Just keep a watch to see if she starts to deterioate in health.
