Sick Diamond Sparrow Hen or not?????

Yesterday afternoon I went to put grass in one of my Aviaries and found my Diamond Sparrow Hen laying flat on the ground. I picked her up to investigate and found that she could not open her eyes, there was discharge around the eyes, she could not open her mouth and her vent was dirty. When I opened my hand she just lay there not moving. I put her in the Hospital cage with heat on her and told my Wife that at least she won't die cold. She just lay on the floor of the cage breathing heavily but other than that not moving.

This morning expecting to expose of her I found her flying from perch to perch, chirping as if to say "what the hell am I doing in here". I took her out, no discharge around the eyes, vent clean so I put her back in the Aviary. This afternoon she looks fine so I took a photo to show you guys/girls, what do you think?

steve I have never heard of such a one day virus. I would have kept her away from the rest of my flock for a while. I found that Diamond sparrows are very tidy looking birds, if the wings hang then inevitably they are sick. If a bird has eggbind and manages to pass the egg, they get better miraculously. She didn't lay an egg in the hospital cage that you missed? Her feathers does not look great is she young and coming into her adult colours or molting?

MariusStegmann, I will check for an egg, she is quite old and has looked a bit ragged for a long time, I will keep an eye on her and remove her again if needed.

Thanks
Steve

What MariusStegmann said!

Sounds like a classic case of being egg-bound. I bet you will find an egg, or, perhaps a jelly-like shell-less egg.

I would still keep a very close eye on her, offer chitted seed, NV powder, or similar, to give her a boost for a few days.

Glad she made it through the night!

:-)

Sunbay, I still can't believe it, awhile back she cut her chest and after some ointment was fine.
