is it hard to pair them up? is it possible that a female and male one will not like each other so the other will kill himself? is this common or rare in finches? i'm thinking of returning my female finch and just getting 2 new lovebirds instead, they seem easier to care for... i am sad that my male finch died and i don't wanna go back to the pet store every time one dies...

Sorry you are off to a rough start with your finch experience. It is difficult to say why your bird died, but suicide isn't likely. They may have become frightened during the night and the male became fatally injured while trying to escape from the threat.

I would get the hen a new mate or if you are not interested in breeding, she will be just as happy with a girlfriend.

i fear you have been put off by an isolated incident as tammie says just buy the bird you have a mate...all the finches i know of are all pretty docile there are not many with a killer instinct in them if you buy lovebirds they are not vicious towars other birds but they will bite you and they screeetch with a passion

Lovebirds are SO!!! LOUD!!! Go to a pet store where they have a lot of them and chances are that 95% of the annoying bird noise is coming right from them.

Finches have great songs and they are fantastic to watch. LOVEBIRDS ARE LOUD!!!!! Stick with the finches they are relatively easy to care for if you give them what they need.
