Hello All.....
Im new to this forum... Need some advice.. I have a pair of Cordon Blues, we've had them for about 3 months. One (female) was in moult when we bought her, I was checking out the bird tonight and noticed a strange growth on the backside on the neck. I've got pictures because it's the strangest thing I ever saw. It's creepin me out. The male also has this infliction. But it's not as big and he's totally has his plumage. so it was hard to see. Anyways, the growth looks yellow in color and sac -ish, there is many sacs actually, small round sacs making up the growth.

What the heck is it?
I have pictures put don't know how to post those, or email me and I'll send them to you... thanks for any advice....

Chances are you're seeing the birds' crops, which is perfectly normal. In grown birds you don't usually see them because the crop is covered by feathers. Do the little lumps look like seed?

I tried to post my picture in the gallery and it failed. I would hope it would be the crops, but it's on the back of the NECK, not the front. And it's just too bizarre looking.

I only have my first set of babies (societies) and the crops on them look like seed thru transparent skin. From what I've seen so far.

This is uniform round yellow sacs in a cluster on the surface of the skin. sorry it doesn't look like seeds to me. I'd be glad to post a picture or send you one.

I agree... that's the crop. Nothing to worry about.

I really wish I could agree. But why is it on the back of the neck.? And I thought that only babies had the crops? Is that not true. These guys are probably 6-8 months old. It's a guess...

If it's the crop then theorectically it will go away or change fairly quickly right? Because I can check in a few days again.

Sorry to sound so weird but it's the location that worries me, and they way it looks. so bizarre, not like my baby society crops.

I appreciate all you insight and help everyone. Keep your comments coming. Let's put it this way if its not the crop then what could it be? Nothing that I've found on the internet that's for sure. Parasite? worms?

you will not see the crop in adults even though it will still be there as it is the way they store food whilst the gizzrd does its job in digesting the previous stuff....this is the stuff that they regurgitate when the younsters want feeding

The back of the neck is exactly where my bird's crops are located. The chick's crop will look different cause they are usually stuffed full and appear huge compared to the lil' chick. I can clearly see millet seed in the photo you posted in the gallery.

WELL! I'm glad I saw a picture of it here, before I ever noticed it on any of MY birds. Cuz that would FREAK ME OUT!

yep someone i know was breeding gouldian and wanted to know what the mouth markings would be like...i always have it on my favourites list

Well that web site was a perfect example of what I'm seeing and I'm glad that's what it is. I love those mouths.... How amazing. I have noticed on my baby finches that there outlines of the mouths are flourescent but I never see the insides.
Man do I feel better and I'm sorry to sound like a freak, this was just so NEW to us. We are only in the 3rd month of owning finches and it's becoming my son's hobby more then mine and he's 10 and still needs lots of guidance with the care and upkeep so I'm learning as I go as I imagine all of you have.
I really appreciate the fact I don't have some alien growth on my cute little CB's. PHEW!

thats what we are here for,i remember when i worked in a garden centre we were always getting questions about the little round eggs in the compost of the plants,they turned out to be slow release pellets of fertiliser........almost the same thing when you dont know exactly what things are you get worried
