Dried blood everywhere

Post by Arama » Sat Oct 24, 2015 12:09 pm

Came home last night from our spooky spooktacular event and checked on my birds and to my absolute horror there was dried blood everywhere. Perches were covered in it and Shy Pies breast was also ccovered in dried blood.

At first I thought maybe her toe injury had reopened but that was not the case. Foot has been healing quite well. I caught her and gave her a warm bath to clean her up so I could find the wound. I went over her entire body and could not figure out where all of the blood came from. I did notice that the skin in the breast area was really dark (blue/black) which is not normal for her. Other then that she's still flying, eating, but having diffifulties perching due to the injured toe. I did check the others to make sure nobody eles had an injury just in case. She's still with the others because theyve been really good to her. I think they know something's wrong. They all cuddle with her, preen her, and I've noticed are very carefull about landing near her with her perching issue.

I got to tell you all, when I saw that dried blood everywhere I freaked out a bit. I was really, really scared for my girl. This morning there's no sign of blood(cleaned it up last night) and I'm perplexed as to what happened.

Is it possible that she scratched herself wrong due to the injured toe?

Wow, what a sight to come home to after a Spooky, pre-Halloween event!

Let us know how she progresses today.

Hi Trisha

Blue black purple skin, could be a hematoma. It might have leaked somehow and amazingly enough sealed itself.

If it's what I think it is, the body should reabsorb the blood in time, and thr skin colour should return to normal.

Another option I suppose, could be an internal bleed of some sort (?), but then, I don't think she would be as active as you say she is.

I hope all turns out well [-o<

with internal bleeding look also for signs of swelling in the abdomen.

Need to ask this but was the "bruising" in the center or off to the one side? A clear picture like this would help us get a better idea... lightly dampen the belly feathers and push them to the side as shown, need to see as much of the underside without and feathers obstructing the view.

A bleed or hematoma would make sense.

The picture you show is exactly how I checke her thanks to regularly reading the forum. Her upper chest had the blue black off to one side and her abdomin was sunken not swollen. She also felt a tad thin so I checked the crop while she was damp and there was food. Give me a couple of minutes I will snap a photo while my youngest is still napping.

Got a few pic's. It seems both sides are dark now but not as bad as the one side was last night. I should have taken a photo then. Oddly enough she is standing up on her legs more now a bit more perky then she has been. Most of the time she was just hanging out on a perch balancing herself on her chest. Her breathing is normal now compared to the heavy breathing I saw last week with the toe.

she may have struggled to get free from whatever caused the toe injury and received internal injuries from the ordeal. If she got caught up in the cage sides (where they meet) she may have been flapping and trying to get away, hitting her body against the cage bars.

I hope this all clears up and she does well. Sounds like she is improving! Hopefully its a just something simple like a pulled out feather and nothing more serious. Keeping my thoughts with ya! [-o<

Arama

Glad she appears to be getting stronger. Could be she has absorbed some blood back into her blood vessels and is therefore now stronger. Hope she continues to improve. Keep us posted & good luck! [-o<

sorry this to a bit.... but showed her belly picture and topic to a friend that often helps with really sick birds on our group, she commented (permission to share this)

"the bird was probably dehydrated and battered. It will be ok but the electrolyte will help. No black blood clots. When they get too dehydrated it changes the blood chemistry, but the electrolyte helps. She might have reopened the toe, if the blood blister (hematoma) popped. A hospital cage with a little heat if she fluffs, the electrolyte until her body color (darken skin turns a pink color) is back to normal. The others may be preening but a quiet place with low perches until the bruising is absorbed and she is perching well would probably be less stressful."

Thank you so much. I actually moved her last night into her private hospital cage just for the peace and better rest. I realized even though they are being nice all their activities are probably driving her bonkers.
