Is this heater safe?

So it's starting to get colder out here at night, and I do have heat lamps, but I want to run a small heater in the room to help. Does this heater look safe to use for the birds?

I'd say definately not safe, your safer using an oil filled radiater, think about feathers and dander/dust touching a very hot heating element

You're right...dust and feathers could definitely pose a problem. I have to use it temporarily until I get paid so I can buy something else. I wanted to make sure it wouldn't release any chemicals that could cause the birds to suddenly fall ill or die. I've heard too many horror stories about that. Also, this was given to us new. I really like the oil filled radiators though...my parents used one in a room that didn't have central heat and air.

slwatson , i use an oil filled radiator but one thing to be aware of is that when new they do give off fumes so better to run it outside birdroom for first few days if new. After that the're ideal.

Want to look for those birds that pull a "runner" and escape. Id build a wire mesh cage around it, so they dont fly into the heater.

When I had birds in my unheated back room, I used these oil-filled radiators. I love them, they are much safer than the ones like you have now. No fan on the radiator types, so no creation of drafts, they simply slowly warm the entire room. They don't tip over easily (though I am such a klutz that I have knocked them over). I have even used them in my house. My bird room is my second bedroom, it is on the northwest corner of a fairly poorly insulated house, so that room is often cooler than the rest of the house. Since I like it pretty cool when I sleep, one of these heaters can keep the bird room from getting too cold when I have babies.

also caution with some of those, some may have teflon in them.

They do also make the stand up coil enclosed ceramic heaters but they do blow the heat out which can be an issue as Sally mentioned. Everyone I know down here in Florida use a oil filled one and their rooms are comfortably warm in the colder months.

I ordered one and it's arriving today...I can't wait to get it Our central heat and air is not working properly right now, so it's getting pretty chilly in our house!

I got my new oil filled radiator heater all set up last night, and it made a big difference in the bird room! I feel so much better now that they have more heat.

That's excellent! I have one of those heaters as well and I am thinking I will pull it out, wipe it down, and turn up the heat! See if I can get the waxbills in the 'mood.'
