Mr. Meepin - Having Weird Poop. Is he sick?

Post by finchlover24 » Fri Oct 30, 2015 2:48 pm

Hi guys,

I just got home from class and I noticed that Mr. Meepin has some weird poop.. normally I'd take note and watch him, but his past 4 poops look like this so it's a bit concerning.

Take a look:

https://goo.gl/photos/8xxjXmMLrAvXBbqK9 (i think the redness is from the red pellet thing that comes in finch food)

https://goo.gl/photos/dQCqwhjrt5BTGHHF6 (bottom one looks like partially undigested seed? maybe i'm just panicking..)

The overall consistency is a bit off and it's 2-3x larger than usual. I'm going to keep a close eye on him. He's acting normal, singing and hopping around, but the poop worries me. I figured that I might as well ask about it in case there's something wrong so I have a better chance of helping him.

Update for those of you who have been with me since the start: Cooper is 4 months old and Meepin is 7 months old! They fight like a married couple! He sings to her thru the grid wall, and she screams at him for him to shut up. It's so funny  Cooper absolutely LOVES her swing and Meepin loves his mirrors :P

Can't get into the pictures, but then I'm not much of a poop-ologist either.

Hopefully someone will chirp in, and offer some ideas. Glad to hear thet the kids are growing :-).

Best of luck.

Its the one to the left, all bubbly and whatnot. :/ Definitely not looking good to me compared to his usual moops. I'm going to look online and see what they say about it but I figured I might as well post here too since I have a better chance of getting help. lovezebs Hope you can see the pictures now.

Sorry still can't see pictures :-(.
Anyway, has Meepin been eating anything different? New foods, new treats, lots of veggies ? Anything out of the ordinary?

lovezebs how about now?

No, not at all. He gets new water and paper everyday. He has his spray millet and the regular bird seed with egg every other day (he tends to ignore it/poop on it if I give it to him too often lol lol). That site says bubbly poop means a nasty bacteria infection, but how if everything is changed daily?? :(

Cooper seems fine, so I don't think it's something contagious yet since they would've both had it? Or does it start off with one and spread to the other? Ugh, I have no idea :( I keep everything so clean.

He seems fine too, not fluffed up, no decreased singing, no hanging around the bottom of the cage, and no loss of appetite. I just gave them both some NV powder in the water. He usually has bigger poops in the morning but thats it. Now it's been the past 4-5 times.

Hi.

Got the pictures now.
Like I said I'm not much on poop. Maybe try to tag Cindy, or MiaCarter, they're more knowledgeable about these things. I hope they can give you some advice.

what have you fed them recently.... any pellets? Certain food can change the color...

the second picture the dropping have a white coating to them and the lower dropping looks off... are there undigested seed in it?

cindy No, no pellets. His regular bird food looks like this:

He eats just that, spray millet, and egg from time to time. That's why I found it odd that his poop looked like that. :/

Are you seeing undigested seed in the droppings?

cindy Sorry, I missed that part in your previous post. I'm not sure what I'm seeing in his poop.. not whole seeds but I don't think they are fully digested either.. sometimes his poop is grey, other times green, and the last time it had bubbles (ew.. i know). More like ground up seeds I guess. His overall poop is concerning considering its larger and much more watery with that white coating than usual.. typically the white portion is contained in its little section but lately its been all over the place.. poor moopie must have diarrhea.

the droppings do not look so much like diarrhea, the droppings still look somewhat firm in some of the pictures you first posted... can't see the second group you posted. Diarrehea is generaly mushy, watery not formed or shaped.

cindy So it's not diarrhea.. what could be causing the excess white coating, clear liquid, and increase in size? Lol I couldn't believe it when I saw it, I mean compared to his usual, it's almost more than twice the size! Unless he's eating a ton more, I have no idea lol

white coating can be caused from a few different things... can you get a realy good close up of one of the droppings that look like it has seed in it?
