Worms or just Poop

Post by BestWholeWorld » Wed Nov 25, 2015 2:42 pm

I am somewhat new to finches (society and zebra finches). Everyday in the water dishes will be a few long worm looking things (see attached photo). Is this some kind of worm or just poop expanded by the water? This is happening with two different cages of birds (3-4 birds per cage) both bought from different sources and kept in separate rooms.

Sorry if the picture grosses anyone out!

It's hard to see the picture but the birds do poop in their water every day and it does look like worms. The water needs changing every day. I have thought the same thing. I think the poop does swell up in there.

Poops, no worries.

Oh, and a big poopy welcome to the Forum :-D

Water needs to be changed at least daily. If you notice the water is dirty, just change it. Is that their drinking water, or bath water?

For drinking water, I would use drinking tubes (less likely to get fouled).

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions later on.

I agree with the others, it's probably just poop in the water. Finches don't seem to care whether they poop in their water or not. As lovezebs said, water tubes are easier to keep clean. I use water tubes for drinking, and then various bowls/baths for their bathtubs.

Thanks, I feel much better now. I use both watertubes, bowls and an separate bird bath. Whenever I see the water is dirty I change it. It does seem to happen more in the water they tend to bathe in or perch themselves over on the bowls perch. I know will birds poop in their water I just wanted to make sure they were not sick with any kind of worms or anything as they are new additions to my little family.

No worries, lol.
All of our birdies tend to poop in the water, and everywhere else for that matter of fact.

I have some poop experts, that manage to fling their poops half way across the room  . Some aim specifically at walls, some at the window, and some uhemmm, at me , when I'm cleaning their flights :-L
