European Gold Finch Male or Female? What kind of Siskin?

Post by Remas » Wed Dec 09, 2015 7:19 am

Dear Goldfinch experts I kindly ask for your advice :

I have a Male Siskin and 3 weeks ago added a Male European GoldFinch to the family :-). Each have separate cages and are not in sight but can clearer hear each other, the Siskin is whistling all day, but I am not hearing anything from the GoldFinch, my question is : Might the EGF not whistle if he is hearing the Siskin ?
Siskin is comfortable as he has been around for a long time, the EGF just got introduced and his cage is placed high and the food is correct he is behaving normal just not whistling, shall i place them far from each other so they do not hear each other, might that help or is the reason that the EGF needs to adapt the new home ? Thanks again...

Hi, it may be that all his surroundings are new and he is just getting used to his new home. He should settle down by a couple of weeks and hopefully start singing. Are you sure it's definitely a male?

Do you think you might have a female goldfinch? It's somewhat difficult to tell them apart. If you are sure it's a male, then just give him time to adjust to the surroundings. Then it might help to play some goldfinch songs off of youtube (search Chardonnert). I prefer the Algerian goldfinch songs but there are many to chose from.
Where are you located? Europe, North America???

Hi Remas - First of all welcome to the forum. There are so many really nice people here, always willing to help.
I have an outdoor aviary and for about 20 years housed (and bred) European goldfinches, black-headed yellow siskins and red hooded siskins together. Everybody got along just fine and they all sang. I'm very happy to see you placed your goldfinch's cage high up. That's very important to make them feel safer. Maybe he will just need some extra time to get comfortable in his new surroundings. I'm also wondering if you do have a male.
What kind of siskin do you have?
Iso

I'm pretty sure I have a male, I tried to attach a photo but wasn't able to find the way to attach the photo's :-( , as for the siskin I am not really sure what kind I have, maybe you can in light me with this information as well.... ;-) As I am not able to attach the photo I guess you will not be able to tell me what siskin I have... ;-)

I guess I will wait for another week or two hopefully the GF will start singing..

I think i have a male GF, the red is going behind his eye, I have posted a picture of "him" in the forum for the experts to confirm and i also posted a picture of my siskin, but the more I research the more I think that i have a mule siskin.

If confirmed that my GF is male will the other bird "siskin mule" affect him singing or not ? Or influence his way of singing ?

Thanks

I'm going to combine these threads about the European Goldfinch and Siskin i.d. into one topic in the General Questions forum for continuity. I hope members are able to help you i.d. your birds as far as sex now that you have posted some photos.

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions later on.
