Finch at bottom of cage puffed PLEASE HELP!

Post by zeenie » Tue Jan 12, 2016 9:10 am

Hi everyone I need some help quick please!

I have a Zebra finch that died a couple days ago and now my Cordon Bleu finch has been at the bottom of the cage fluffed for 3 days.
I went out in the middle of the night about 2 hours ago to Walmart to get some Pedilyte.
When i got back and checked I thought she was dead on laying on her front chest.
She barely had any energy to move. I helld her and she moved about every other minute.
Not even enough energy to open her eyes.

I took a baby syringe and started giving her drops of Pedilyte touching them to her beak. It was very slow and constant but she opened her one eye then moved her beak more and more.
She started moving more and I kept up the drops.
She moved even more and started opening her eye wider then moving her tail. She started drinking the pedilyte very slow. Making clicking gurgling sounds as she drank, i just waited, and kept giving more for about 1/2 hour. She opened other eye! and started chirping after a little longer. She then opened both eyes and started to move in my hands.

I layed her on a towel in the cage and she has her eyes open but she keeps trying to get off towel and getting stuck sometimes upside down.
I want to leave he to rest but affraid if im not there when she does that again she might get stuck in bars or upside down then use too much energy.

Should I sit in her room quietly and watch her?
I dont know what to do. I gave her a new unopened skwirt of Bene Bac last night about 6 hours ago. Only problem it said it best by 2014, so I read it sounds like egg bound but since the Zebra was doing the same i doubt it and now Zebra died so.

Wondering if i should buy new Bene BAc directions say give once then three days later but I already gave it but its expired.

Any help would be greatly appreciated she is my oldest bird and I love her the most dont want to see her go now!!

Going to look in on her now make sure she isn't caught up again.

She was laying on her side with her eyes open on the towel(where i keep putting her)when i left the room.

Sorry to hear about your little girl. At this point I would make sure you're keeping her warm and out of drafts - a clamp light on the cage near enough to give her extra warmth but not so near as to overheat will help to keep her comfortable. If you have a nearby vet you can take her to see if they can identify the underlying problem and help, but if she's an older bird unfortunately it may just be her time. Best not to stress her out by too much handling or supplements. In these cases I usually make sure there is a little food and water in containers a weak finch can reach nearby.

Best of luck!
Hilary

I'm so sorry about your girl being so sick, and about losing your Zebra.
Personally, I would do the best to keep her comfortable and warm and as calm as possible.

Do you know how old she is?

thank you both for caring and responding quickly.

Bluebell died while I was writing my post for help. I was with her before I started writing and she was resting and when i finished the post I immediately went to go sit with her again she was already gone.

I was so amazed that I just about brought her back to life with the Pedialyte and was so hopeful.
I would like to believe it was her time she was over 8 years old I do know that. She was next to the other cage when the Zebra died last weekend they were all covered under a big blanket.
So i know she saw her pass and that must have stressed her so much.
Also, all the finches (4 of them, now only 2) were treated with Scatt last week. I remember reading that after treating them with Scatt it stresses them out for a little while after. I dont know if that is true or not.

So sorry you lost her, but 8 years old (and possibly older) is pretty old for a waxbill. It sounds like it was just her time, and I'm so glad you found her and were able to comfort her in her last hours.

So sorry for your loss :(
I don't think the Scatt had anything to do with it. I treat with Scatt during quarentine which is a very stressful time for new finches and have never had a problem using it. I don't ever recall hearing that it causes stress either, I would guess that's a bit of misinformation that you find surfing the net.
Best of luck with your remaining two birds.

Poor baby.....
Their life span, if I recall correctly, is five to ten years.... so Bluebell, had a good life.

I am truly sorry for your loss..... it never gets easier, sigh...

Keep a close eye on your other two feathered kids, and let us know how they're doing.

Good luck and best wishes.

So sorry for your loss. You did all you could for her in her last days. Unfortunately once a bird is that deteriorated its is rather challenging to save them even when they are young. Sounds like she had a good long life with you with lots of love.

Was your Zebra also older? What symptoms did the ailing finches have?
Skinny, eating a lot, runny droppings any signs that could help determine if they just met their time or if there is possibly an underlying issue with the flock. Do you have any other birds?

Thank you they have been grieving hard, they just aren't the same birds now. I suppose it will take much time and warmer weather soon!
I may be wrong but I believe I was told that about the Scatt from someone at Lady Gouldian Finch.

The Zebra was unknown age but only had her 2 years.
The symptoms were they were at the bottom of cage and puffed and had loss of coordination. The Zebra was on the bottom for many days, the Cordon just a couple days.
I have a Zebra female and a Cordon Bleu female and both are still grieving.
