Beak Problem with my Zebra Finch Lola

Post by flymouse » Wed Feb 03, 2016 10:37 am

Hello all,
Been a bit since I have posted. Kind of been lost in to much going on. Stressfull.

Ok I have a problem and I will send a photo, but will have to wait until this afternoon to be able to snap a pic.

The problem...............I've noticed Lola's bottom part of her beak is longer than her top part of her beak. I hope this makes since. I have heard somewhere about trimming beaks, but she is so tiny about a year old. And I have no idea how to do it. And she is in a cage where there is a new baby in another nest. Not hers. So catching her will most likely upset everyone. Please advise. As stated above I will send photo later today. Please help. Thank you .

Have a great day
Mickey Jo

Most times small imperfections will be corrected with her beak swipes and chewing on hard surfaces.
There are times when a trim is needed if she is having trouble eating her food.

Hi, this happens a lot with my gouldians, I just use small nail clippers and carefully trim the part that sticks out of place. If your worried about the baby in the cage, as long as she's eating properly just wait a bit, should be fine. :)

Hello, and welcome back :)

I have a Canary girl with a similar problem, only with her, it's the upper part of the beak that grows longer.

When I notice that the tip is getting too long, I catch her and trim it with small nail clippers to match the bottom part.

As mentioned above, if it will cause an upset to nesting parents in the flight, and if she's eating alright, then I wouldn't worry about it for the time being.

I hope all is well with you and yours.

well new problem. Now she has decided to lay eggs. Which means I need to wait until her clutch is grown. I love my aviary and having all of them in one cage, but it is getting really hard now.

Have a great day

I'm very late in sending the photo. I have been putting off clipping due to other nest had a baby in it. I haven't heard him chirping for food in a couple days. Checked today and he was dead. Society Finches. So sad.

Anyways here is Lola with her over grown beak on the bottom
