Quarantine Question

Post by lnlovesorange » Thu Mar 03, 2016 1:29 pm

Hi all, just have a question on quarantine. I'm going to be adding Societies to my flock. I am buying them from a pet store that has other birds, hook bills and finches, in pretty close proximity. Wondering what I should treat for during quarantine, if anything. I was going to do SCAT, and a de wormer ( I have both in my Finch Fixing Arsenal) Also was planning on doing the AIL spray. Anything else I should do? Or should I NOT do one of those things. Someone once told me if the bird is not outside and isn't going to be outside then they don't need worm treatment. I am just wondering what my best course of action is for a quarantine, also is there any specific foods I should give them. (anyone who doesn't know me) My birds get fresh veggies, a seed mix, and Zupreem Fruit Pellets, also put LaFaebers finch pellets out, but I don't know how much of that they really eat... And then I give them eggs prolly once a week, and sprouted seed a couple times. Right now they are getting more egg and sprouted seed because my Goulds just started thier moult (all 3 of them at the same time, thank goodness, last itime 2 moulted and then the third... My goodness I thought I'd never get rid of all the feathers... for MONTHS!!! It's funny, actually I just bought myself a 10% down pillow & the rest is feathered, but not down and I said to my Mum, jeesh I should have just saved up the Gouldian's (and Zebs') feathers, and bagged them, it would have been a lot cheaper!!!! LMAO =D> As per usual, I'm off topic.
So yes, please recommendation on what to treat for if anything, and the best amount of time in quarantine. Thanks all!

Here's a very good article on how to quarantine your birds.

There are many opinions but in my opinion at the very least you should treat for ASM's and worms with an avian wormer not S76 or the like. I would treat all birds from pet stores especially since you have no idea where the store got them from and the living conditions.

Good luck, keep us posted on their arrival

debbie276 I have a wormer, um I need to look up the brand name... I think I got it from Terri.....glamgouldians, .....hold on i'm checking. I have worm away by Morning Bird, and I don't have S76 I don't think, but I think I'm confused by your post. so you are saying to use the worm stuff, but NOT Scat? I will read your link, too thank you for that. Just let me know if the Morning Bird worm away is what you have in mind for that (good point on not knowing where they came from and what kind of conditions) Just not sure if I read your post wrong, sounded like you are saying to NOT use S76 or scat..... Sorry I'm kinda dumb sometimes!!! Thanks Deb! And thanks for the link!

Do an ASM treatment, Iverlux is just like S76. AND use a wormer, worm away is fine. Some sites say the S76 and the like will kill worms but not all the worms. To be sure you clear the bird use a real wormer like worm away.
Sorry for any confusion

I made up a treatment schedule, and my quarantine period comes out to 78 days.
