Help identifying illness

Post by JustAlex09 » Tue Apr 05, 2016 6:09 pm

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forums and in owning society finches in general and I could really use some help. One of my finches, Bee, appears to be unwell but I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with her.

She seems to have some abdominal swelling but any searches on google give me very generalized descriptions and no images to work with, so I have no idea if what I'm dealing with is a bound egg, a parasite, tumor, genetic disorder, old age or something else completely. (Google is useless when it comes to looking up finch illnesses -very general descriptions and no pictures).

Image

(her feathers are wet cause I gate her a bath).

The area immediately below the "T" of her rib cage shifts/rolls (i assume it's her gizzard?). Symptoms other than what you see in the image is very loose/liquid droppings. I've compared her chest/abdominal area with Fly, Katydid and Cricket and they're all normal (no weird abdominal shifting or discoloration).

She's a very relaxed bird, but she's not lethargic and can be quite active when she wants to be. She eats and drinks and takes baths all the time. She socializes with her cage mates (3 other finches and a house sparrow), chirps and does typical finch things. The only reason why I realized she might be sick is because I had to clean a glob of dried poop off her vent that she couldn't seem to reach.

Also, and I don't know if this is relevant or not, but Bee's missing feathers around her head/neck that don't seem to be growing back. She was like that when I bought her. She also keeps her feathers puffed up (which she's done since the day I got her).

I assume whatever's wrong with her isn't contagious because none of the other birds have gotten sick and, near as I can tell, Bee's always had this illness/oddness (I've had her for about 3 months).

Any help identifying what's wrong with Bee would be greatly appreciated, so that if any other finches I get show similar symptoms I'll know what it is and how to treat it.

It is very difficult to diagnose over the internet, and anything that is said is just guessing. So many diseases have similar symptoms that it usually takes diagnostic tests to tell exactly what is going on. Vets can take samples of droppings and/or blood.

One thing I always do for a hen that seems unwell is treat her as if she is egg bound. It doesn't hurt if she isn't and it can save her life if she is. One or two drops of liquid calcium directly to the beak, then putting a heat lamp aimed at one end of the cage and adding humidity (drape a wrung-out wet towel over one end of the cage, away from the heat lamp), and then I wait it out.

Welcome to the forum, though it is not under the best of circumstances. There's lots of good reading at www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care. If you put your general location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions later on.

I forgot to mention this, but I don't know if Bee is a boy or a girl, which is one of the reasons why I don't know if this is a bound egg or not. I just refer to Bee as a 'she' out of habit.

So I got Bee to the vet today (finally!) and discovered several things:

1) The abdominal swelling is due to a benign cyst and that there's not much I can do about it.

2) Said cyst occurs mostly in older birds and as a result, the vet's fairly certain Bee's at least six years old.

3) the lack of feathers around her neck is due to possible scar tissue from being plucked/bullied by other birds when she was younger.

All in all not bad. I'm glad it wasn't anything worse.

Glad you got some answers, and that it wasn't any worse than it is, it could have been much worse.
