Ivomec question.

Post by Maleficum » Sun Apr 17, 2016 1:01 pm

Hi!
Do any one know how long you can store Ivomec without it going bad? And dose the container it's stored in make any difference?
I have Ivomec that have been lying in the fridge for a few years now (in a plastic syringe) sins my bunnies had mites. I can't remember exactly when I got it but I had it at least sins 2012.
Is it safe to use on the birds or is it just to throw it out? Dose it just loose the effect or do it get more toxic over time?

(Here in Sweden you have to have a sic bird and go to the vet to get the medication but I would really like to be able to do some preventative treatment when I finally find new friends for Malte).

I don't trust old meds and for the sake of the animals you keep, I would just throw it out.

I'd also dispose of it. Usually it's also best for long term storage in one of the dark bottles to prevent degradation by light.

Thanks for the answers :) Then I will through it out with all the other old medicine I have and try to get hold of a new batch instead.

If you have it in the original bottle (or another dark bottle) do you know how long you can keep it then after it's opened?

It would be best to ask a Pharmacist about the shelf life and storage conditions. Even your local pharmacist should be able to give advice on it.

Never thought about asking them! Have to do it next time I'm getting the dogs medicine then. Thanks again!

Most pharmacists I've chatted too seem only too keen to offer information. Don't suppose they often get asked. That or I am just lucky to have very keen pharmacists around.
